Getting Around Iğdır

Iğdır is a compact city on a plain at the foot of Mount Ararat, in Turkey's Eastern Anatolia region. It is the easternmost city in the country, sitting close to the borders with Armenia, Nakhchivan (Azerbaijan) and Iran, and its economy and daily life revolve largely around agriculture and livestock. For a visitor, the practical upshot is that getting around is simple: this is a place you navigate on foot, by taxi and by minibus rather than by any large urban transit system.

Walking the City

Iğdır's centre is small and walkable, and much of what a visitor wants — the main streets, the cafés and restaurants, the city centre and the Nation's Garden — sits within an easy stroll of one another. The city is livelier and wealthier than many of its neighbours in generally impoverished eastern Turkey, a change helped along by agricultural growth and the opening of a border gate with Nakhchivan in 1992, and that shows in a busy, pleasant street life. Walking is also the best way to sample the local food: look for bozbaş, the meat stew that is the city's best-known dish, along with hengel, katlet, ayranaşı soup, and the apricots for which Iğdır is famous.

Two caveats apply. First, Iğdır has a continental semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters, so plan your walking around the season — summer midday heat and winter ice are both real considerations. Second, air pollution is a chronic problem here, caused mainly by coal burning, and the city has drawn attention as one of Europe's most polluted. On poor-air days, it is worth limiting how much time you spend walking.

Rail, Metro and Tram

There is no metro or tram network in Iğdır, and no urban rail of any kind. As of 2016 there was also no rail transport to the city at all. A railway line linking Nakhchivan and Kars is planned to include a stop at Iğdır once it is completed, but until then rail simply is not an option for reaching or moving around the city. Visitors should plan on road and air instead.

Buses and Minibuses

Long-distance buses are the main way in and out of Iğdır by land. The city's intercity bus terminal acts as a hub between Eastern Anatolia and the Caucasus, with regular connections to Erzurum, Kars, Ağrı, Van and Nakhchivan. Journeys to nearby regional centres are manageable: Kars and Ağrı are each roughly a couple of hours away by road, while Erzurum is a longer haul of around five to six hours. Several companies serve these routes, among them Metro Turizm, Iğdırlı Turizm, Vangölü Turizm and Best Van Turizm. Tickets are sold online and at the terminal, where you will also find ticket offices, waiting lounges and restaurants.

For getting out to the surrounding districts, the bus terminal is the place to go: minibuses run from there to the district towns. Within the city itself, minibuses and dolmuş-style services are the everyday public transport, and you pay the driver in cash on board — there is no city-wide ticket or travel card scheme to worry about.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are readily available in the centre and are the most convenient option for short trips, for reaching the bus terminal with luggage, or for out-of-town sights where minibuses do not run. Fares are metered, so agree on the basis of the fare or confirm the meter is running before you set off. Ride-hailing apps are not a dependable part of the transport picture here; treat taxis and minibuses as your realistic choices rather than assuming an app-based car will be available.

Getting from Iğdır Airport into the City

Iğdır Airport opened in 2012 and handles domestic flights to Istanbul and Ankara, making it the quickest way to reach this corner of the country. The airport lies a short drive from the city centre — around 16 km — so the transfer is brief. Taxis are the straightforward option at the terminal, and this is the one leg of a trip where having a taxi arranged or waiting is genuinely useful. If you prefer public transport, minibus services link the airport area with the city, but schedules are limited and can be awkward to match to a flight arrival, so many visitors simply take a taxi.
