Getting from the Airport to the City
Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB) is located approximately 30 km north of the city center. While there is no direct metro connection to the airport, travelers have several options to reach the heart of the city:
- Express Coaches: Two companies, Ankara Air and Havaş, operate express shuttle buses from the airport to the Kızılay area. Havaş also provides service to the AŞTİ bus terminal. These services accommodate luggage and typically cost 200 TL.
- Public Bus (EGO): Route 442 runs from the airport's arrival level to Kızılay. This is a more economical option but takes longer than the private shuttle services, requiring roughly 40-50 minutes to reach the train station area.
Navigating the City: Metro and Rail
The city features a multi-layered rail network that provides essential links between residential districts and central hubs.
- Metro System: The metro is operated by EGO and consists of several lines that intersect at Kızılay. While the numbering (M1, M2, M3) can be confusing, these lines function as a continuous route from the northwest suburbs through the city center to the southwest. A separate line (M4) branches off from Kızılay toward the north.
- Ankaray: This is an east-west suburban railway that connects Dikimevi to the AŞTİ bus station via Kızılay. It functions as part of the integrated transit network.
- High-Speed Rail (YHT): For those arriving from other major cities like Istanbul, Konya, or Sivas, Ankara serves as a primary hub on the YHT high-speed network. The modern station for these trains is located near Celal Bayar Boulevard and features a shopping mall and hotel.
Buses and Local Transit
The city has an extensive bus network operated by EGO. Buses are easily identifiable by their white, blue, or red colors, and many central stops feature real-time arrival displays.
- Payment Methods: Cash is not accepted on EGO buses. Visitors should purchase a Başkent Kart from a kiosk or metro station, or use the EGO Cep'te mobile app for QR scanning. This card is also valid for Metro and Ankaray travel, allowing for free transfers between modes within a 45-minute window.
- Minibuses and Dolmuş: In specific hubs like Kızılay and Ulus, privately operated minibuses (dolmuş) are available. These operate on a cash-only basis and display their destinations on a board behind the windshield.
Taxis and Walkability
