Getting Around Adapazarı
Adapazarı is a sprawling city, so getting around on foot alone won't cover everything you'll want to see. The practical reality for visitors is that you'll rely on a mix of local rail, buses, dolmuş minibuses and taxis, depending on where you're headed and how far you're going.
Rail: Adaray and the Mainline Trains
The local commuter service, Adaray, connects Adapazarı with Arifiye, with four intermediate stations along the way. This is the handiest rail option for moving between the city centre and the Arifiye area to the southwest.
Adapazarı also sits on Turkey's mainline rail network, which matters both for getting around the wider region and for arriving in the city. YHT high-speed trains link Arifiye with Ankara, Konya and Eskişehir to the east, and continue west toward Izmit, Gebze and the Istanbul stations at Pendik, Bostancı and Söğütlüçeşme, with one service a day running out to Halkalı. An overnight Ankara Express also calls at Arifiye in both directions. Regional trains run from Gebze via Izmit, Sapanca, Arifiye and Mithatpaşa into Adapazarı.
For timetables and tickets, the national rail operator TCDD is the place to look. Note that Arifiye station sits some distance southwest of the town centre, while Adapazarı station is right in the centre. Mithatpaşa station is a useful alternative if you're heading to or from the southwest side of the city.
Buses and Dolmuş
Long-distance buses are the main intercity option, and they all use the Sakarya bus terminal. From there, you'll need a taxi or a dolmuş to reach the town centre — the terminal is not within easy walking distance of the centre.
Within the city, dolmuş minibuses are one of the two workhorse modes for visitors, alongside taxis. Given how spread out Adapazarı is, expect to use them for most trips beyond the immediate centre.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are readily described as one of the practical ways to get around this sprawling city, and they're also the natural choice for the transfer from the Sakarya bus terminal into town. If you're arriving by long-distance bus or need to cover ground quickly between neighbourhoods, a taxi is the straightforward option.
Walking
Walking works well for the city centre itself, where you'll find the central railway station and the main urban amenities. Beyond that, Adapazarı spreads out considerably, so most visitors will find that walking alone isn't enough to get around the whole city — plan on combining walks in the centre with taxis or dolmuş for longer hops.
Getting There from the Airport
Adapazarı has no airport of its own, so visitors fly into one of the Istanbul airports and continue overland.
- From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), on the Asian side: take Metro line M4 to Pendik, where you can pick up eastbound trains toward the Adapazarı area.
- From Istanbul Airport (IST), on the European side: take Metro line M11 into the city, then connect onward to the rail network serving Adapazarı.
Once you're on the rail network, the regional trains from Gebze — itself the eastern terminus of the Marmaray suburban line, with frequent trains from downtown Istanbul — run via Izmit, Sapanca, Arifiye and Mithatpaşa to Adapazarı. High-speed services from the east also call at Arifiye, so you can join the network at whichever point suits your route.
Arriving by Car
If you're driving, the usual approach from Istanbul is to follow the O-7 east (a toll road). From Ankara, the route runs north on the E89 and then west on the E80.

- Use Adaray for the Adapazarı–Arifiye corridor and the mainline trains for anything beyond the city.
- Use dolmuş or taxi for getting around within the sprawling city.
