Getting Around Bandırma

Bandırma is a compact port city on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara, and its transport network is built around that role: the railway station sits by the harbour, the ferry piers are a short walk away, and the main bus station lies on the highway south of town. For a visitor, the practical result is that most of the places you'll want to reach are linked by a handful of straightforward options.

Orienting Yourself

Two anchor points matter most. Bandırma railway station is by the harbour, within a couple of hundred metres of the ferry piers, so arriving by train or by sea puts you essentially in the same place. The bus station, by contrast, is a few kilometres south of town on the D200 highway from Bursa, so a bus arrival means you'll need a onward hop into the centre. Keep these two locations in mind when planning connections.

Rail

Bandırma is one of the Turkish State Railways' main seaports, which is why the city sees a good deal of freight rail traffic. For passengers, the useful service is the daily train to and from İzmir. It runs from İzmir Basmane via Manisa and Balıkesir, takes almost six hours, and leaves İzmir in the morning under the name "6 Eylül Ekspresi" (6th of September Express). It returns south from Bandırma in the afternoon as the "17 Eylül Ekspresi". These services are timed to connect with the ferry, so rail and sea can be combined in a single journey. A new railway project is planned to connect Bandırma with Bursa, and a high-speed line from Ankara and Istanbul has long been under construction, but neither is something a visitor can rely on today.

Ferries and Sea Connections

Given Bandırma's position as a port city, boats are a genuine part of getting around the region rather than a novelty. İDO ferries sail daily from Istanbul, departing from both Kadıköy on the Asian side and Yenikapı on the European side near Sultanahmet; the crossing takes about two and a half hours. BUDO does not serve this route, though it does run from Istanbul to Mudanya near Bursa. There is also a ferry link from Tekirdağ to Bandırma, operated by Marmara RoRo, which sails twice a day from Tekirdağ Ceyport on the far mainland coast. Regular ship trips to Tekirdağ and Istanbul depart Bandırma daily.

Buses, Dolmuşes and Local Transport

Within the city, a swarm of buses, dolmuşes (shared minibuses) and taxis run between the main bus station, the downtown area and the ferry port. This is the practical way to cover the gap between the bus station and the centre, or to reach the port when you're carrying luggage. For longer journeys, buses run hourly from Istanbul's Anadolu station, taking about four hours; Metro Turizm, Pamukkale and Flixbus are among the lines competing on that route. Frequent buses also link Bursa and Bandırma in around two hours, and many of those continue west to Çanakkale, which is useful if you're heading for Troy or Gallipoli. If you're coming from Ankara or Konya, the quickest approach is to take the YHT high-speed train to Eskişehir and connect there with a bus to Bursa.

Taxis

Taxis are part of the same local mix as the buses and dolmuşes, running between the bus station, downtown and the ferry port. For short hops with luggage, or for reaching the bus station early in the morning, they're the simplest option. Ride-hailing apps are not documented in the available sources for Bandırma, so plan on hailing a taxi in the street or at a stand rather than relying on an app.

Walking

Walking works well for the harbour area. The railway station and the ferry piers are within a couple of hundred metres of each other, so transferring between train and boat on foot is easy. The downtown area is reachable on foot from the waterfront, but the bus station is a few kilometres out on the D200, which is too far to comfortably walk with bags — take a dolmuş, bus or taxi instead.

Reaching Bandırma from the Airport

Bandırma has no airport of its own. International travellers typically fly into Istanbul and continue from there by bus or ferry. The ferry is the more distinctive option: İDO sailings from Kadıköy and Yenikapı take about two and a half hours and land you at the piers right beside the railway station. The bus alternative runs hourly from Istanbul's Anadolu station and takes roughly four hours, arriving at Bandırma's bus station south of town, from where you'll need a local bus, dolmuş or taxi into the centre.
