Getting Around Balıkesir
Balıkesir is a walkable city at its core, and most of what a visitor wants to see sits close together in the centre. For anything beyond that, you rely on local buses, dolmuş minibuses and taxis, with the railway station and the old bus terminal acting as the main hubs for onward travel.
On Foot
Walking is the simplest way to cover the centre. Most places of tourist interest lie within a short stroll of the railway station and the clock tower, so a visitor based downtown can reach the main sights on foot without needing any transport at all.
Rail
Balıkesir sits at the junction of two railways, which makes it reachable by train from several directions — but patience is required, and there are no plans to extend the YHT high-speed trains to the city.
- From Ankara: the İzmir Mavi Treni (Blue Train) runs nightly via Eskişehir and Kütahya, continuing from Balıkesir to Izmir via Manisa and Soma.
- From Izmir: the Ege Ekspresi is a daytime train on the Izmir–Eskişehir section, where it connects with YHT trains from Istanbul, Ankara and Konya.
- Along the coast: the 6 Eylül Ekspresi runs daily from Izmir via Manisa and Soma and continues north from Balıkesir to Bandırma on the coast. On its return south from Bandırma it is called the 17 Eylül Ekspresi, departing at 16:00 so that passengers can connect with the ferry from Istanbul.
The railway station is on Cumhuriyet Meydanı at the east edge of downtown. Across the highway from the station is the old bus terminal, Eski Garaj, which is the focus of local transport. For timetables, fares and online tickets, see Turkish State Railways (TCDD).
There is no metro or tram network in Balıkesir — the city's public transport is built around buses, minibuses and rail.
Buses and Dolmuş
Local bus and dolmuş lines radiate from Eski Garaj, next to the railway station, so that terminal is the natural place to start if you need to reach a part of town beyond the centre.
For longer journeys, Balıkesir lies on the main route between Istanbul and Izmir, so intercity coaches run very frequently with competing companies. Operators include Metro Turizm, Pamukkale and Flixbus. Buses from Istanbul take a route via Gebze and Bursa and continue south via Akhisar and Manisa to Izmir. The main otogar (bus terminal) is northeast of town along Bandırma Cd (D220), and buses ply frequently between it and Eski Garaj on the north side of the railway station — useful if you arrive by coach and want to get into the centre.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
The source material does not describe taxi services or ride-hailing apps in Balıkesir, so no specific guidance can be given here. In practice, taxis are the usual fallback for short trips that are awkward on foot or by bus, but you should confirm availability and fares locally on arrival.
Getting In from the Airport
Balıkesir's own airport, Balıkesir Merkez Airport, sits southeast of town but has a military airbase and no commercial flights, so it is not an option for visitors.
The nearest airport with commercial service is Balıkesir Koca Seyit Airport (EDO), formerly Edremit Airport, roughly 100 km west of the city. It has daily flights from Istanbul and a weekly flight from Ankara. Note that it is a long way from Balıkesir itself, so you will need overland transport to cover the distance into town.
The airports at Bursa and Çanakkale are similarly inconvenient and sparsely served. For many international visitors, the most convenient approach is to fly into one of the Istanbul airports and continue by overland transport or by ferry, connecting to Balıkesir by coach or train.
By Car
Balıkesir sits near motorway O5, which runs from Gebze (for Istanbul and Ankara via O7) through Bursa and continues south to Izmir. Driving gives you flexibility, but within the city the walkable centre and the bus/dolmuş network from Eski Garaj mean you may not need a car for local sightseeing.
