Getting Your Bearings in Bangkok Noi

Bangkok Noi is one of the districts (khet) of Bangkok, sitting on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River. It borders Bang Phlat, Phra Nakhon (across the river), Bangkok Yai, Phasi Charoen, and Taling Chan. For a visitor, the district's practical anchors are Charan Sanit Wong Road, which runs through the entire district from the south to the north, and Borommaratchachonnani Road, another main artery that also links to the neighbouring districts of Taling Chan and Bang Phlat. Arun Amarin, Itsaraphap, and Phran Nok Roads are the smaller roads in the area. The Chao Phraya River forms one edge of the district, and the khlongs (canals) thread through it — the district's own slogan celebrates its "lively khlong."

How Visitors Move Around Bangkok

Bangkok's public transport is a mix of rail, boats, buses, and road vehicles, and Bangkok Noi is served by several of these. The district's position on the Thonburi side means the river is often your fastest link to the historic core on the opposite bank, while the metro connects you to the rest of the city's rail network. The sections below cover each mode in turn.

Rail, Metro, and Trams

Bangkok Noi is served by the MRT Metro, whose Blue Line runs above Charan Sanit Wong Road through the district. The stations in the district are Fai Chai and Bang Khun Non. This gives you a direct, traffic-free way in and out of the district and a connection into the wider metro system.

The district also has a railway heritage. Bangkok Noi Railway Station — formerly known as Thon Buri Railway Station — serves trains to the west, especially to Kanchanaburi. It was built in 1900 in European style, destroyed during World War II when the Japanese used it as a logistics base, and rebuilt in the same style after the war. In 2003 the station was moved roughly a kilometre westwards, and the old building now stands unused, its cleared space currently used as a parking lot. If you are heading west by train, note that the working station is the relocated one, not the historic building.

There is no tram network in Bangkok Noi; the rail options available to you are the MRT Blue Line and the national railway.

Boats and Piers

The river is one of the most useful ways to move between Bangkok Noi and the Phra Nakhon side. The Chao Phraya Express Boat stops at two piers in the district, both in the area of Siriraj Hospital: Prannok (N10) and Thonburi Railway (N11).

Wang Lang Pier, adjacent to Wang Lang Market, is both a Chao Phraya Express Boat pier and a ferry pier to Tha Phra Chan and Tha Chang on the Phra Nakhon side. This crossing is busy with people and foreign tourists throughout the day, so expect company and allow a little time at peak periods.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Buses run along Borommaratchachonnani Road and past Central Pinklao, and they are a practical option for reaching the district from Pinklao, Taling Chan, Ratchaphruek, Bang Phlat, and central Bangkok. If you are heading to a specific terminal or landmark, get off near it and walk the last few minutes.

For longer journeys, Bangkok Noi is also a departure point for services out of the city. The Lomprayah Bangkok (Pinklao) terminal, at 147–147/2 Borommaratchachonnani Road in Arun Amarin, Bangkok Noi, is a departure point for overnight bus-and-ferry or bus-and-catamaran services to Gulf of Thailand islands including Koh Nangyuan, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, and Koh Samui. Departures are daily, typically in the evening, with the bus leg overnight and the ferry or catamaran crossing in the morning. Passengers are advised to arrive 30–60 minutes before departure for check-in, and advance booking is recommended for weekends, public holidays, festivals, and peak seasons. Tickets can be booked online or through authorised agents, and the terminal has a waiting area, luggage space, a check-in counter, and staff assistance.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and ride-hailing apps are a straightforward way to cover the last stretch to a specific address. Grab, Bolt, LINE MAN, and ordinary taxis all operate in the area. For the Lomprayah Pinklao terminal, for example, you can set your destination as "Lomprayah Bangkok (Pinklao)" or "Lomprayah Pinklao Branch, Borommaratchachonnani Road." Motorcycle taxis are also a common short-hop option — from Bang Yi Khan MRT station, for instance, a taxi or motorcycle taxi covers the roughly five-to-ten-minute ride to the Lomprayah terminal.

Walkability

Walking works best in Bangkok Noi for specific destinations rather than as a way to cross the district. The riverside and market areas are the most rewarding on foot: Wang Lang Market is a daily bustling market by the Chao Phraya River, flanked by Siriraj Hospital and Prannok Pier, and the National Museum of Royal Barges sits on the northern rim of Khlong Bangkok Noi near its mouth to the river. Wat Suwannaram Ratchaworawihan is on the southern rim of the khlong, and Wat Rakhang Khositaram Woramaha Wihan is a major temple by the Chao Phraya. Elsewhere, the main roads are long and the district is spread out, so plan to combine walking with the metro, a boat, or a short taxi ride.

Getting In from the Airport

The reference material for Bangkok Noi does not describe airport transfers directly. What it does establish is the set of connections you would use once you are in the city: the MRT Blue Line through Fai Chai and Bang Khun Non stations above Charan Sanit Wong Road, the Chao Phraya Express Boat piers at Prannok (N10) and Thonburi Railway (N11), the ferry from Wang Lang Pier to Tha Phra Chan and Tha Chang, and buses along Borommaratchachonnani Road and past Central Pinklao. From the airport, the practical approach is to reach the city's rail or bus network and then connect into one of these — the MRT for the district's stations, or a bus or taxi for a direct door-to-door run. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are available for the full journey if you prefer not to change modes with luggage.
