Understanding Bang Bon
Bang Bon is one of Bangkok's districts (khet), located on the western, Thonburi side of the city. It borders Bang Khae, Phasi Charoen, Chom Thong and Bang Khun Thian within Bangkok, and touches Samut Sakhon province to the west and southwest. It is a largely agricultural and residential area rather than a tourist hub, known for products such as Nam Doc Mai mangoes, coconuts, orchids and lotus. Landmarks include Wat Bang Bon and the 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary Park, also known as 9 Hills Park.
Because Bang Bon sits on the outer edge of the city, getting around is mostly a matter of connecting to Bangkok's wider transport network and then covering the last stretch by road. The guidance below explains the main options.
How Visitors Move Around Bangkok
Bangkok's public transport combines rail systems, an extensive bus network, taxis and ride-hailing services, plus boats along the river and canals. Visitors typically use rail for longer, faster trips across the city and road-based transport for shorter or more local journeys. Bang Bon is served mainly by road-based transport, so plan on combining a bus or taxi with the rail network when heading into central Bangkok.
Rail, Metro and Tram Network
Bangkok has a growing rail network of elevated and underground lines that connect many parts of the city and its suburbs, with interchange stations where lines meet. Fares are generally paid per journey using tickets or stored-value cards, and day or multi-day passes are often available for visitors who plan to ride frequently.
Note that Bang Bon itself is not directly on the rail network, so reaching a station will usually involve a bus, taxi or ride-hailing trip first. Once on the rail system, you can travel quickly between central districts and transfer between lines at interchange stations.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Buses are the main form of public transport serving Bang Bon. Several lines stop near the Makro Bang Bon bus station on Kanlapaphruek Road, including lines 147, 169, 172 and 558. This station sits on Kanlapaphruek Road and is roughly 13 kilometres from the city centre, making it a practical starting point for journeys into Bangkok.
The station has a ticket office open from 06:00 to 20:00. If you are departing from here, arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure. Amenities at the site include free parking at Makro Bang Bon, a food court, an ATM, and toilets inside the store; the station is wheelchair accessible. There is no car rental or shower facility. The surrounding area is generally well lit.
Beyond buses, Bangkok also has canal and river boat services, though these are more useful in central areas than in Bang Bon.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are readily available at the entrance to the Makro Bang Bon bus station, and ride-hailing apps are a convenient option throughout Bangkok. For a district like Bang Bon, where rail access is indirect, taxis and ride-hailing are often the simplest way to reach a rail station or a specific destination. Agree on the fare or confirm the app price before setting off.
Walkability
Bang Bon is a spread-out, road-oriented district, so walking is best suited to short local trips rather than covering distance between neighbourhoods. The area around the Makro Bang Bon bus station is generally well lit, which makes evening walking there more comfortable. For most journeys, plan to use a bus, taxi or ride-hailing service rather than relying on foot.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Bangkok's main international airport is served by rail links and by road. The most straightforward options for a visitor are the airport rail link into the city, where you can transfer to the metro or other lines, or a taxi or ride-hailing car for a direct door-to-door trip. If you are heading onward to Bang Bon, expect to combine one of these with a bus, taxi or ride-hailing journey for the final leg, since the district is not directly on the rail network.
Practical Tips
- Use rail for fast cross-city travel and buses, taxis or ride-hailing for local trips in and around Bang Bon.
- Buy rail tickets or a stored-value card at stations; ask about day or multi-day passes if you plan to ride often.
- For buses from Makro Bang Bon, check lines 147, 169, 172 and 558 and buy tickets at the office (open 06:00–20:00).
- Arrive at the bus station at least 30 minutes before departure.
- Taxis wait at the station entrance, and ride-hailing apps work well as an alternative.
- Plan for road-based transport to reach a rail station, since Bang Bon is not directly served by rail.
