Getting Around Ziguinchor

Ziguinchor is the chief town of the Casamance region, sitting at the mouth of the Casamance River. It is a compact, low-rise city, and most visitors find it easy to navigate without a car. This guide covers the practical options for moving around town and for reaching the city from its airport.

Rail, Metro and Tram

There is no metro, tram, or urban rail network in Ziguinchor. The city's public transport is entirely road- and water-based, so you can plan your visit around taxis, shared taxis, motorcycle taxis, and walking.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Ziguinchor does not have a conventional city bus network that visitors would use for getting around town. The city's role as a transport hub is mainly regional and long-distance: it is a cargo port, a transport hub, and a ferry terminal, and the Nationale 4 highway crosses the Casamance River just east of the city, linking the region with Bignona to the north and, via The Gambia, the rest of Senegal.

For longer journeys, sept places (shared long-distance taxis) depart from the gare routière. If you are heading to Dakar by road, be at the gare routière before 06:00; the trip via the Transgambian highway crosses the Gambia River at the Farafenni ferry and can be covered in one day if everything goes smoothly.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are the main way visitors get around Ziguinchor. A single-stop taxi ride costs CFA 500 anywhere within the city, regardless of the number of passengers. Shared taxis also operate on city routes, which makes them a cheap option if you are happy to share the vehicle.

Motorcycle taxis, locally called jakartas, are the fastest local transport, with fares of roughly $0.50–1 per trip. They are a quick way to cover short distances around town.

There is no mention of ride-hailing apps operating in Ziguinchor, so plan on hailing taxis or jakartas on the street rather than booking through an app.

If you want to explore beyond the city, hiring a car with a driver is an option: a day trip to Oussouye runs about $40 per day, and a day trip to Cap Skirring about $50 per day including the driver.

Walkability

Ziguinchor is a compact city, and walking is a reasonable way to get around the central areas. The city is a melting pot of Senegal's ethnic groups and has a predominantly Christian character with mosques also present, so strolling between markets, places of worship, and the waterfront is part of the experience. Do note that the climate is tropical savanna, with hot, rainless winters and warm, very wet summers, so plan walks around the heat and the heavy summer rains.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Ziguinchor has its own airport, Ziguinchor Airport (ZIG). There is a daily flight from Dakar, operated by Air Sénégal, with a flight time of about one hour; the flight sometimes continues to Cap Skirring, the main coastal resort. Once you land, the same local options apply for the final leg into town: taxis, shared taxis, and jakartas.

Arriving by Ferry

If you arrive by sea rather than by air, the Aline Sitoe Diatta ferry links Dakar with Ziguinchor. It is an overnight ferry ride of about 15 hours, leaving Dakar on Tuesday and Friday at 20:00 and making the return trip from Ziguinchor on Thursday and Sunday at 13:00. The boat has pullman-style seating as well as shared cabins of 8, 4, and 2 berths; 2- and 4-berth tickets include a breakfast of coffee, baguette, and jam. Book as early as you can, especially in the travel season, as it is frequently sold out. Since there is no way to reserve tickets online, you may need to work with a third party such as a hotel to obtain them. All passengers must show their original passport or other form of identification when purchasing a ticket at either the Dakar or the Ziguinchor terminal. There is a restaurant on board and a small bar that also sells snacks, and the ferry makes a quick stop at Carabane Island in both directions.
