Getting Around Thiès

Thiès sits at the junction of railway lines running to Dakar, Bamako and Saint-Louis, which makes it a genuinely useful stop for travellers moving through western Senegal. Within the city itself, getting around is simple and low-key: this is a place where you flag down a taxi rather than consult a transit app.

Rail Connections

The city's main rail hub is Thiès railway station on Avenue General de Gaulle, and it's the anchor for longer-distance travel rather than everyday movement around town. From here, one daily train connects with Diamniadio, in the eastern suburbs of Dakar. At Diamniadio you can continue into central Dakar using the fast TER trains, so the rail route works as a two-step journey rather than a single direct service. Because departures are limited to one a day, it's worth planning your onward travel around that schedule rather than assuming you can turn up and go.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Thiès is also served by a gare routière in the southern part of the city, which is the point to head for if you're catching intercity road transport. Note that this is distinct from the railway station, and the two are far enough apart that you'll want a taxi to move between them.

Taxis

Taxis are plentiful and are the practical way to get around Thiès. Fares are low and informal: most rides cost around 500 CFA. If you're travelling from the centre out to the gare routière in the southern part of the city, paying 600 CFA is not unreasonable. Expect to negotiate or confirm the price with the driver rather than rely on a meter, and keep small notes and coins on hand.

Walking

Walking works well for short hops within the central area, and the railway station on Avenue General de Gaulle gives you a clear landmark to orient yourself by. For anything longer, or for the trip out to the southern gare routière, take a taxi instead.

Getting In from the Airport

Thiès is reached from Dakar along the N2 road, and the rail option into the capital region runs via Diamniadio, where you change onto the fast TER trains for central Dakar. If you're arriving by air, the practical approach is to arrange your transfer into Thiès in advance or pick up a taxi on arrival, then use the city's plentiful taxis once you're in town.
