Getting Around Rufisque

Getting your bearings

Rufisque sits at the base of the Cap-Vert Peninsula, east of Dakar along the coast. It was once an important port town in its own right, but today it functions largely as a suburb of the capital, and it has no real tourism sector of its own. That shapes how you move around: there is no visitor-oriented transport infrastructure, so you rely on the same everyday services that residents use. The practical upside is that Rufisque is well connected to Dakar, which makes it workable as a base or a day trip.

Rail: the Dakar TER

The most comfortable way in and out of Rufisque is the Dakar TER (Train Express Régional). Rufisque has a TER stop, and the line connects it with Colobane in Dakar. Trains run frequently, roughly every ten minutes, and the trip takes around half an hour. Fares are low and split into classes: a second-class ticket costs a few dollars at most, and first class only slightly more. You can check schedules and details on the operator's website, ter-senegal.sn. For a visitor, the TER is the simplest option if your destination in Dakar is near the Colobane end of the line.

Buses

Dakar Dem Dikk runs the urban bus network, and it serves Rufisque directly. Line 15 connects Rufisque with the Palais area of Dakar, departing roughly every half hour throughout the day and taking around three-quarters of an hour. Buses leave from the area around Rufisque's station and arrive at Palais station in Dakar. The listed fare is around $10, which is high for a local bus, so treat that figure with caution and confirm the current price locally. Dakar Dem Dikk can be reached via demdikk.sn or on +221 33 824 10 10.

Taxis

Taxis are the quickest and most flexible way to cover the Rufisque–Dakar corridor, with a journey of around 24 minutes by road. The fares quoted online are extremely low (around $1), which almost certainly reflects a local shared-taxi rate rather than a private hire; agree the price before you get in. A private car or taxi over the same route takes a similar amount of time.

Walking

Rufisque has a compact historic core along the waterfront, including the old "Escale" commercial and administrative quarter laid out in the nineteenth century. Walking is a reasonable way to explore that central area, but be aware that the city has suffered chronic underinvestment in public infrastructure, so pavements and street lighting may be uneven or lacking. For anything beyond the centre, or for the trip to Dakar, use the train, bus or a taxi.

Getting from the airport into the city

Once in Dakar, the TER is the most straightforward link to Rufisque, with frequent trains to the Rufisque stop. Alternatively, Dakar Dem Dikk buses and taxis cover the corridor. If you prefer a single direct journey, arrange a taxi or private car from the airport; the road trip to Rufisque takes well under an hour in normal conditions, though traffic on the Dakar approach can lengthen it considerably.
