Getting Around Serangoon New Town

Serangoon is a residential town in Singapore's North-East Region, and for a visitor it works well as a base because its main hub is built around an integrated transport node. The practical centre of gravity is Serangoon Central, where the bus interchange and the MRT station sit inside and beneath the Nex shopping mall. From there you can reach the rest of Singapore by rail, and the surrounding neighbourhoods by bus or on foot.

How Visitors Move Around Singapore

Singapore's public transport is built around a rail backbone supplemented by buses, with taxis and ride-hailing filling the gaps. For a short visit, the simplest approach is to treat the MRT as your default for longer hops and buses for the last stretch to a specific address. Fares on both are paid with the same tap-in, tap-out stored-value card or contactless bank card, so you do not need separate tickets for each mode.

If you are basing yourself in Serangoon, the key thing to understand is that the town's transport hub is genuinely integrated: the bus interchange, the MRT station and a large shopping mall are all in one place, so switching between bus and train is a matter of walking indoors rather than finding a separate terminal.

Rail: MRT and LRT

Serangoon is served by the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system. The North East Line runs parallel to Serangoon and Upper Serangoon Road, and Serangoon station is an interchange between the North East Line and the Circle Line. That interchange is the single most useful fact for a visitor: it means you can change between two major lines without leaving the station.

Stations in the Serangoon area include:

Two further stations, Serangoon North and Tavistock, are under construction on the Cross Island Line and are slated for completion by 2030. A future Seletar Line is also planned to serve the Serangoon North area from the 2040s. These are not yet open, so do not plan around them for a current trip.

Note that Singapore's rail system also includes the LRT, a light rail network that acts as a feeder to the MRT in some housing estates. Serangoon itself is not an LRT town, so for practical purposes your rail travel here means the MRT.

Buses and the Bus Interchange

Serangoon Bus Interchange is an integrated transport hub at Serangoon Central, serving Serangoon, Kovan and Serangoon Gardens. It is located within the Nex shopping mall, with direct entrances to the underground Serangoon MRT station, so bus-to-train transfers happen indoors. The interchange is air-conditioned, and its glass walls face the bus bays.

Nearby landmarks include Braddell Heights Community Hub, Braddell Heights Community Club and Serangoon Stadium.

Services from the interchange fan out across the island, including routes toward Ghim Moh, Buangkok Crescent, Yishun, Jurong East, Changi Village, Rhu Cross, Serangoon North Avenue 5 and Berwick Drive, plus an express service to Jurong East. Some routes are short-trip variants that terminate partway along the full route, so check the destination display before boarding.

Facilities at the interchange include a Passenger Service Office, a top-up kiosk, information boards and service guide racks, bus departure timing screens, retail outlets and toilets. If you need to add value to a fare card or ask about a route, the Passenger Service Office is the place to go.

Be aware that the interchange is undergoing upgrading works, with berth assignments changing in phases. If a service is not at the berth you expected, check the on-site signage rather than assuming the printed guide is current.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the flexible option when you are carrying luggage, travelling late, or heading somewhere not well served by a direct bus or train. In an integrated hub like Serangoon Central, the natural pickup and drop-off point is the mall and interchange complex, which is also where you would meet a taxi or a ride-hailing car. Because the interchange sits on a slope but is level with Serangoon Avenue 2, vehicle access is via the junction with Serangoon Avenue 2.

Walkability

Serangoon Central is comfortable on foot. The interchange, the MRT station and Nex are physically connected, so you can move between bus, train and shops without going outdoors. Pedestrian exits lead from the interchange to Serangoon Avenue 2 and into the Nex retail areas.

Beyond the central hub, the town is made up of distinct subzones — Serangoon Central, Lorong Chuan, Upper Paya Lebar, Serangoon Garden, Serangoon North, Seletar Hills and Serangoon North Industrial Estate — and these are spread out enough that walking between them is not practical for most visitors. Use the rail network for the wider area and walking for the immediate vicinity of the hub.

Getting In from the Airport

Singapore's main international airport is Changi Airport, in the east of the island. The most straightforward way into Serangoon is by rail and bus via the integrated hub: take the MRT from the airport into the city network, transfer to the North East Line or Circle Line, and alight at Serangoon, where the bus interchange is directly connected if you need a final bus leg.

If you are arriving with heavy luggage or at an awkward hour, a taxi or ride-hailing car from the airport directly to your accommodation in Serangoon is the simpler option, since it removes the need to change trains with bags.

For a cheaper but slower journey, note that bus service 109 runs between Serangoon Bus Interchange and Changi Village, which is useful context for the eastern side of the island but is not an airport service — for the airport itself, rely on the rail connection or a taxi.
