Getting Your Bearings
Serangoon is a planning area and residential town in Singapore's North-East Region, bordered by Sengkang to the north, Hougang to the east, Ang Mo Kio and Bishan to the west, and Toa Payoh to the south. For a visitor, the practical heart of the area is Serangoon Central, where the main shopping mall, Nex, sits directly on top of the bus interchange and the MRT station. Other subzones worth knowing by name include Serangoon Garden, Lorong Chuan, Upper Paya Lebar, Serangoon North and Seletar Hills.
How Visitors Get Around Singapore
Singapore's public transport is built around a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail system, supplemented by an extensive bus network. For most visitors, the MRT is the fastest way to cover longer distances, while buses fill in the gaps and are useful for shorter hops or reaching places the rail lines don't serve. Both are integrated, so you can plan a journey that mixes the two. Taxis and ride-hailing apps round out the options when you want a door-to-door trip.
The Rail Network Around Serangoon
A large part of the North East Line runs parallel to Serangoon and Upper Serangoon Road, specifically the stretch between Little India and Kovan stations. That means Serangoon is well connected to the city centre along this corridor.
Stations located in Serangoon include:
- Serangoon — an interchange station served by both the North East Line and the Circle Line, making it the key hub for the area.
- Bartley — on the Circle Line.
- Lorong Chuan — on the Circle Line.
Because Serangoon station is an interchange, you can switch between the North East Line and the Circle Line without leaving the paid area, which makes it easy to reach destinations across the network from here.
Two further stations are under construction on the Cross Island Line — Serangoon North and Tavistock — slated for completion by 2030. A future Seletar Line is also under planning to serve the Serangoon North area, with opening slated from the 2040s. These are future additions, so don't count on them for a trip today.
Buses and the Interchange
Serangoon has a long-standing bus interchange: the original opened along Serangoon Central, and it later relocated to Nex. That puts the interchange, the mall and the MRT station in the same complex, so transferring between bus and rail is straightforward.
Buses are the workhorse for shorter trips and for routes that the rail lines don't cover. If you're staying in the area, the interchange at Nex is your starting point for bus journeys, and the network connects onward to many other interchanges and termini across the island.
Service hours are generous: buses generally start early in the morning and some routes run past midnight, so late-evening travel is often possible. Check the specific route you need, since first and last timings vary by service.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are a convenient option when you want to go directly to a destination, are carrying luggage, or are travelling in a group. They're particularly useful for reaching parts of Serangoon that sit away from the rail line, such as Serangoon Garden or the more residential subzones. You can pick them up at the mall or interchange, or arrange a pickup via an app.
Walkability
Serangoon Central is quite walkable: the MRT station, the bus interchange and Nex are all clustered together, so you can move between them on foot without much effort. Beyond the centre, the area becomes more spread out and residential, and walking between subzones is less practical — that's where buses, taxis or the rail line come in. As a rule, treat the town centre as your walkable base and use transport for anything further afield.
Getting In From the Airport
Singapore's main international airport is Changi Airport, on the eastern side of the island. The most straightforward way into the city and onward to Serangoon is by MRT: the airport is connected to the rail network, and you can ride into town and transfer to the line that serves Serangoon. Because Serangoon station is an interchange, it's reachable with a change or two depending on your route.
If you'd rather not navigate transfers with luggage, a taxi or ride-hailing car from the airport is the simplest door-to-door option and will take you straight to your accommodation in Serangoon. Buses also serve the airport area, but they involve more changes and are slower with bags.
Practical Tips
- Use Serangoon station as your anchor — it's the interchange where the North East Line and Circle Line meet.
- Head to Nex for the bus interchange; it's in the same complex as the MRT station and the mall.
- Plan mixed journeys: rail for longer distances, buses for local hops and places off the rail line.
- Keep taxis and ride-hailing in mind for luggage-heavy trips, groups, or late nights.
- Check first and last service times for your specific bus or train, as they vary by route.
