Getting Around Yishun New Town
Yishun is a residential town in Singapore's North Region, and its transport is built around a single, very convenient hub: the Yishun Integrated Transport Hub, where the bus interchange sits inside Northpoint City and connects to Yishun MRT station by an underpass. For a visitor, that means most journeys begin and end at the same compact spot in the town centre.
Rail: The MRT
Yishun MRT station is on the North South Line and is the anchor of the town's public transport. The station is linked to the Northpoint City shopping mall and to the bus interchange below it via an underground walkway, so you can move between train, bus and shops without stepping into the weather. If you are staying anywhere near the town centre, the train is the simplest way to reach the rest of Singapore.
Buses and the Integrated Transport Hub
The Yishun Bus Interchange operates as an air-conditioned Integrated Transport Hub within Northpoint City's South Wing, at Yishun Town Centre. It serves both Yishun and the neighbouring Khatib residential area. The hub is easy to navigate: there are separate alighting and boarding berths, queue lines and priority seating at every berth, route information boards, electronic departure screens and interactive panels.
- Practical facilities: passenger service offices for the operating bus companies, toilets, a nursing room, charging stations, a drinking water point and SimplyGo kiosks and top-up kiosks.
- Where the buses go: trunk services fan out across the island, with routes heading to places such as Tampines, Punggol, Serangoon, Bedok, HarbourFront, Woodlands, Bukit Batok and the city area, plus an express variant toward New Bridge Road.
- Local loops: a set of feeder and loop services (numbered in the 800s) circulate through Yishun's neighbourhoods, including north, east and west loops, which is useful for reaching housing estates, neighbourhood centres and hawker food away from the town centre.
- Cross-border: a cross-border service runs from the interchange to Johor Bahru via the Causeway, handy if you are continuing into Malaysia.
- Hospital link: a shuttle connects the hub with Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.
Entrances to the hub open early in the morning and close around 1am daily. One entrance opens onto the Yishun Avenue 2 bus stop with escalators up to Northpoint City and down to the MRT underpass; others serve North Point Drive (where there is a pick-up and taxi stand) and the town square and garden areas.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
There is a pick-up and taxi stand at North Point Drive, by the North Park Residences side of the integrated hub, which is the natural place to meet a taxi or a ride-hailing car. Because the hub sits within a large mall and residential development, it is worth telling your driver to look for the North Point Drive entrance rather than the main Yishun Avenue 2 frontage.
Walking
Yishun is a walkable town centre. Northpoint City sits directly beside Yishun MRT station, with an underground walkway linking the mall to the station and the bus interchange beneath it. Other destinations are within easy walking distance too: Junction Nine, a mixed development at Yishun Ring Road and Yishun Avenue 9, is described as a seven-minute walk from Yishun MRT station. The town's neighbourhood centres, such as Chong Pang City and Khatib Central, cluster shophouses, eateries, markets and shops together, so once you arrive by bus or train you can cover them on foot.
Getting In From the Airport
The reference material for this guide does not describe airport transfer options, so specific routes, fares and travel times from Changi Airport to Yishun cannot be given here. In practice, the most reliable approach is to take the MRT from the airport into the city and change onto the North South Line toward Yishun, or to use a taxi or ride-hailing car directly to your accommodation. On arrival at Yishun, the MRT station, the bus interchange and the taxi stand at North Point Drive are all within the same town-centre complex.
Practical Tips
- Use the Integrated Transport Hub as your orientation point: train, buses, mall, taxi stand and underpass all meet there.
- Top up or manage your fare card at the SimplyGo kiosks inside the bus interchange.
- Check the electronic departure screens at the berths before queuing, since many services leave from the same concourse.
- For neighbourhood food and local shops, take a feeder service from the interchange rather than walking long stretches of arterial road.
