Getting Around Ang Mo Kio New Town
Ang Mo Kio is a residential new town in Singapore's North-East Region, sitting north of the Downtown Core and bordered by Yishun, Sengkang, Serangoon, Bishan and the Central Water Catchment. For a visitor, the practical upshot is simple: the town is built around a compact, well-connected centre, and Singapore's wider transport network makes it easy to reach the rest of the island from here.
How Visitors Move Around Singapore
Singapore's public transport is the default way to get around, and Ang Mo Kio is a good example of how the pieces fit together. The town is served by a rail line, a large bus interchange, and a dense network of local bus services, with taxis and ride-hailing filling the gaps. Fares on trains and buses are generally paid with the same stored-value card or contactless bank card, so you can move between modes without buying separate tickets each time.
Ang Mo Kio's own transport hub is deliberately integrated: the bus interchange sits inside the AMK Hub shopping mall, and it is connected to the MRT station by an underpass beneath Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8. Retail, buses and trains are effectively under one roof, which makes transfers quick and sheltered.
Rail: The MRT Network
Ang Mo Kio MRT Station opened in 1987 and sits on the North-South Line. That line is the backbone for reaching the city centre and many other parts of Singapore, and the station is directly linked to the bus interchange and AMK Hub.
To use the trains, tap in and out with a stored-value transit card or a contactless bank card at the fare gates. If you need to top up a card or sort out ticketing questions, the bus interchange houses a SimplyGo Ticketing Service Centre (open daily except public holidays) as well as a SimplyGo kiosk and a top-up kiosk.
Note that Singapore's rail system is a metro-style network; there are no trams to worry about. Within Ang Mo Kio itself, the train is best thought of as your link to the wider island rather than a way to move between neighbourhoods.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Buses do the heavy lifting for short trips within the town and for connections to places the rail line does not reach directly. Ang Mo Kio Bus Interchange, at 57 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, is the focal point. It is operated by SBS Transit and is an air-conditioned interchange integrated with AMK Hub.
The interchange is well equipped for visitors:
- Passenger Service Office and a SimplyGo Ticketing Service Centre (open daily 10am–6pm except public holidays)
- SimplyGo kiosk and a top-up kiosk for fares
- Information boards and screens showing bus departure timings
- A service guide rack for route information
- Nearby amenities including Cheng San Community Centre, Ang Mo Kio Polyclinic, Djitsun Mall and Ang Mo Kio Town East Garden
Services from the interchange fan out across the island, so you can reach destinations well beyond Ang Mo Kio without returning to the city centre first. Examples of the kind of coverage available include routes toward Shenton Way, Clementi, Woodlands, Punggol, Eunos, Upper East Coast, Kembangan and Compassvale, plus a loop service to Mandai Lake Road and the Singapore Zoo. Several local feeder services loop around the town's own avenues and streets, which is useful for reaching residential blocks, markets and clinics away from the town centre.
One route worth knowing for airport travel is service 24, which loops to Changi Airport. There are also short-working and terminating variants on some routes, so check the destination display or the departure screens before boarding.
Be aware that the interchange is undergoing enhancement works, with temporary berth changes in effect during the upgrading period. Berths can be relocated at short notice, so follow the on-site signage rather than relying on a printed berth number.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the flexible option when you are carrying luggage, travelling late, or heading somewhere awkward to reach by bus or train. In Ang Mo Kio the natural pick-up and drop-off point is the town centre around AMK Hub and the bus interchange, which is also where the MRT station connects. Because the interchange, mall and station are clustered together, you can meet a car there and then walk straight into the covered network if you prefer to continue by public transport.
Walkability
Ang Mo Kio is a planned HDB new town, and its layout is designed to be walkable in the town centre. The centre sits in the heart of the town, sandwiched between two town gardens set on natural hillocks, and the interchange, mall and MRT station are linked by an underpass, so you can move between them without crossing busy roads at street level.
Parks and green space are a feature of the town and make walking pleasant rather than purely functional. Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East and Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West are both within the town, and the Bishan–Ang Mo Kio Park straddles the boundary with neighbouring Bishan, making it easily accessible from Ang Mo Kio. The town centre itself was planned around a pedestrian mall, so the core is oriented toward people on foot.
Practical tip: use the underpass and the mall as your spine for getting between the station, the buses and the shops, then walk out from there to the gardens and surrounding blocks.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Changi Airport is served by public bus as well as by taxi and ride-hailing. From Ang Mo Kio, bus service 24 runs as a loop to Changi Airport, which means you can travel between the town and the airport without changing onto the rail network. If you are starting your trip at the airport and heading into the city, the same options apply in reverse: bus, taxi or ride-hailing, or the MRT once you have connected to the rail network.
For the smoothest journey, decide based on luggage and timing. With heavy bags, a taxi or ride-hailing car from the airport is the least effort. Travelling light, the bus and train combination is inexpensive and straightforward, and your stored-value or contactless card works across both. If you are heading specifically to Ang Mo Kio, service 24 gives you a direct bus link to the town's interchange, where you can transfer to local feeder services or walk into the town centre.
