Getting Around Sollentuna
Sollentuna sits in Stockholm's northern suburbs, and the good news for visitors is that it is well served by the region's public transport network. You can reach the area from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport by car, taxi, or commuter rail, and once you are here, commuter trains are the backbone for moving around the region.
Rail and Commuter Trains
The Stockholm commuter rail network is the main way to travel through Sollentuna and the surrounding northern suburbs. Sollentuna has its own commuter rail station, which connects the area to the wider Stockholm rail system. Commuter trains cover most of the region, making them the most practical option for reaching neighbouring suburbs and for travelling into Stockholm itself.
Some long-distance trains also call at Upplands Väsby, a nearby stop in the northern suburbs, and many regional trains serve that station as well. If your journey takes you further north or along regional routes, it is worth checking whether your train stops there.
Roslagsbanan
Roslagsbanan is a narrow-gauge commuter railroad that runs through Danderyd, Täby and Vallentuna. It is a distinctive part of the local network — worn down and noisy, but more quaint than regular railroads. It serves the northeastern suburbs rather than Sollentuna itself, but it is a useful and characterful option if your travels take you in that direction.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Buses fill in the gaps left by the rail network. SL, the regional public transport operator, runs bus services across the northern suburbs — SL line 80, for example, calls at Djursholm. For a visitor, the practical approach is to treat buses and commuter trains as one combined network: use the trains for longer hops between suburbs and into the city, and buses for local connections and neighbourhoods without a station.
Tickets and Passes
Public transport in the Stockholm region, including the commuter trains and buses serving Sollentuna, is operated under the SL system. Tickets and travel passes are valid across the modes within that system, so a single ticket or pass covers your train and bus journeys rather than requiring a separate fare for each. Buy your ticket or pass before boarding and keep it with you for the duration of your trip.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are a straightforward option, and the reference material notes that the northern suburbs — including the route from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport — are easy to reach by taxi. Taxis are particularly handy for door-to-door trips, for arriving or departing with luggage, and for late-night travel when you would rather not wait for a train. Ride-hailing services operate in the Stockholm region as well, and can be booked through their apps in the same way as taxis.
Walking
Sollentuna is a suburban municipality, so walking works best for short, local trips — getting from a station to nearby shops, services, or accommodation — rather than as a way to cross the whole area. Plan to combine walking with the commuter rail and buses: take a train or bus to the stop nearest your destination, then walk the last stretch.
Getting In from the Airport
Stockholm-Arlanda Airport (ARN) is by far Sweden's busiest airport and a hub for Scandinavian Airlines. From the airport, the northern suburbs — Sollentuna among them — are easy to reach by car, by taxi, or by commuter rail. The commuter rail option connects the airport to the regional rail network, so you can travel onward to Sollentuna by train. If you prefer a direct, door-to-door journey, a taxi or a car is the simplest choice. Airport amenities are covered under Sigtuna, the municipality where the airport is located.
