Getting Around Omdurman

Omdurman sits on the west bank of the Nile, opposite and northwest of Khartoum, and forms part of the Greater Khartoum metropolitan area along with Khartoum and Khartoum Bahri. It is the country's second most populous city and an important road hub, with the Nile boosting transportation further. For a visitor, the practical upshot is that Omdurman is well connected to its neighbouring cities by road and bridges, while getting around within the city relies on a mix of taxis, buses, three-wheelers, trains, and Nile ferries.

How Tourists Move Around the City

Within Omdurman, transportation varies widely. The options a visitor is most likely to use are yellow taxis, city buses, and other buses of various sizes (known locally simply as "buses"). Three-wheeled motorcycles, called "tuk-tuks" — and known in Khartoum as "raqshas" — are also used, in addition to trains and Nile ferries.

For most local trips, the most convenient forms of transport are tuk-tuks and taxis. Whatever you choose, agree on the fare with the driver before boarding; this is the single most useful habit to adopt.

Rail, Metro and Tram

Omdurman has no railway station of its own. Sudan's main railway station is in Khartoum, which receives trains from northern regions including Atbara. If you want to travel by rail, you reach the station in Khartoum and then cross the Nile by taxi or bus to get back to Omdurman. Trains are also listed among the transport modes used within the city itself.

There is no metro or tram network to plan around. Rail in the Khartoum area is oriented around the main station in Khartoum rather than a local urban transit system.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Buses are a mainstay of movement in and around Omdurman. Regular intercity buses and shared taxis link Omdurman with Khartoum on a short trip, and there are long-distance routes onward to Kassala and Humera in Ethiopia. Travel times vary with road and weather conditions, so morning departures are recommended. The city's position in the centre of the country, almost within the national capital, facilitates its connection to the capitals and cities of the various states of Sudan by land, via both paved roads and seasonal roads.

Ferries are another public transport option: Nile ferries operate alongside trains, buses, and tuk-tuks as ways of getting around.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Yellow taxis are one of the standard ways to move around Omdurman, and shared taxis also serve intercity links such as the run to Khartoum. As with tuk-tuks, settle the fare with the driver before you set off. Carry cash: the currency is the Sudanese pound, and credit cards are rarely accepted — only at very large hotels — so plan on paying for transport in cash.

Walkability

The source material does not describe Omdurman as a walking-oriented city, and the practical guidance points instead to taxis, tuk-tuks, buses, trains, and ferries as the ways people get around. If you do spend time on foot, keep in mind the local climate and customs: Omdurman has a hot arid climate and is one of the hottest major cities in the world by annual mean temperature, so light natural fabrics, covered shoulders and knees, a hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sun protection are advisable year-round. Drink only bottled water. Greet with the right hand and respect local traditions in mosques and markets. Photography is prohibited at government buildings, military sites, bridges, and airports, and you should ask permission before photographing residents.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Omdurman has no airport of its own. The nearest international airport is Khartoum Airport (KRT), which serves Omdurman and is connected to the city by taxi and public transport. Other regional airports — Kassala (KSL) and Humera (HUE) — are used mainly for domestic travel rather than as arrival points for Omdurman.

A new Khartoum International Airport facility was proposed south of Omdurman; construction began in 2019, was suspended in 2021, and was completed in December 2025. If you are arriving by air, plan on Khartoum Airport as your gateway and arrange a taxi or public transport connection onward to Omdurman.
