Getting Around Az Zulfi
Az Zulfi is a mid-sized oasis city in Riyadh Province, sitting where the Al-Nafud desert sands meet the Tuwaiq Mountains in the Wadi Samnan valley. For a visitor, the most important thing to understand up front is that this is a car-oriented city: there is no practical public bus network within the city, no metro, no tram, and no railway station. Getting around is done by taxi, ride-hailing app, or rental car, and traffic congestion is rare, so moving between the center, the palm groves, and the desert edge is generally quick and stress-free.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Az Zulfi has no direct railway connection, and the city has no metro or tram system. If you are arriving by train from elsewhere in the Kingdom, you will need to complete the journey by road: the nearest major railway stations are Qassim railway station and Riyadh railway station, both some distance away, with Qassim the closer of the two. From either station, arrange a taxi, a ride-hailing car, or a rental car for the final leg into Az Zulfi.
Buses and Public Transport
Within the city, public bus service is practically nonexistent, so do not plan your visit around local buses. Intercity buses are a different matter: SAPTCO services connect Az Zulfi with Riyadh and with Buraidah, making the coach a viable option for reaching the city from those hubs. Buraidah is roughly an hour away by road, and Riyadh is a drive of a few hours via highway. If you arrive by intercity bus, expect to continue to your accommodation by taxi or ride-hailing app, since local onward public transport is not something you can rely on.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis booked through mobile apps, along with rental cars, are the main ways visitors get around Az Zulfi. This is the practical backbone of local transport: use a ride-hailing app to move between your hotel, the central markets, the wadi, and the desert outskirts. Because traffic congestion is rare, journeys across town tend to be straightforward. Rental cars are the other main option and give you the most flexibility if you want to explore the Al-Nafud dunes on the city outskirts or the palm groves at your own pace.
Walking
Walking works best for specific pockets of the city rather than as a way to cross it. Evening activity in this conservative city centers on coffee shops, restaurants, markets, and walking the central squares, so a stroll through the central markets and squares is a natural part of an evening here. The historic heart of the city along Wadi Samnan, with its palm groves and ancient irrigation systems, and the old quarters laid out around water sources, are rewarding on foot. For anything beyond these areas, plan on a car or taxi. Bear the climate in mind: summers are extremely hot with daytime temperatures often above 43°C, so walking is best reserved for the cooler months and for evenings. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is advised, sunglasses are useful year-round, and bottled water is recommended.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Al Zulfi Airport (IATA: ZUL) primarily serves private aviation and specialized domestic flights, with few regular commercial routes. That means most visitors will not arrive through it on a scheduled airline ticket. If you do fly in, arrange ground transport in advance, as you would anywhere with limited commercial service. Many travelers instead reach Az Zulfi by road from a larger hub: from Riyadh the highway drive takes a few hours, and Buraidah is about an hour away. SAPTCO intercity buses from Riyadh and Buraidah are the public-transport alternative, after which you would take a taxi or ride-hailing car to your final destination.
Practical Tips for Moving Around
- Plan on taxis via mobile apps or a rental car as your default transport; local public buses are not a realistic option.
- Use SAPTCO intercity coaches to reach Az Zulfi from Riyadh or Buraidah, then switch to a taxi or app-based car.
- There is no train station in the city; the nearest major railway stations are at Qassim and Riyadh.
- Walk the central squares, markets, and the Wadi Samnan palm groves in the evening or cooler months rather than in summer heat.
- Carry cash for the date markets, though cards are widely accepted and ATMs are found in the central districts.
- Expect establishments to close briefly during prayer times, and ask permission before photographing people.
- Take care during dust storms blowing in from Al-Nafud, and keep bottled water with you.
