Getting Around Al Kharj

Al Kharj is a governorate in Riyadh Province, located southeast of the capital and home to the second-largest population in the province. Its main urban centre is Al-Saih, with other towns such as Al-Dalam and Al-Yamama nearby. For a visitor, the practical reality is that Al Kharj is a car-oriented place: there is no metro, tram or light-rail network within the governorate, and getting around independently relies mainly on taxis, ride-hailing and private vehicles. The sections below set out what exists and how to use it.

Rail: Freight, Not Passengers

Al Kharj is directly connected to Riyadh and the industrial ports of the Persian Gulf via the main network of the Saudi Railways Company (SAR). This rail infrastructure is used for freight — industrial commodities, military equipment and agricultural products — rather than for moving visitors around the city. Do not plan on catching a train into or across Al Kharj.

Metro and Trams

There is no metro or tram system in Al Kharj. The nearest metro network is in Riyadh, and it is relevant to visitors only as a way of reaching the Riyadh bus station from which services to Al Kharj depart (see below).

Buses and Public Transport

Public transport within Al Kharj is limited. The bus service that matters most to visitors is the intercity link between Riyadh and Al Kharj, operated by SATRANS (satrans.com.sa, phone +966 920018221).

Because services are infrequent, check timings in advance and confirm your return options before travelling.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

With no metro or tram and only limited buses, taxis and ride-hailing apps are the most practical way for a visitor to move around Al Kharj itself. They are also the sensible choice for the final leg from the bus stop to your accommodation, and for reaching outlying sites such as the historical palaces and archaeological areas, which are spread across the governorate rather than concentrated in one walkable district. Arrange your ride before you arrive at the bus stop if possible, since the drop-off point may not be a formal taxi rank.

Walkability

Walking is not a realistic way to cover Al Kharj as a whole. The governorate is large and its points of interest — including King Abdulaziz Palace in the Al-Aziziyah district of Al-Saih, Abu Jafan Palace east of Al-Saih, the historic town of Al-Yamama to the north, and the monuments of Al-Dalam — are dispersed across different towns and districts. Expect to walk only short distances, such as between a bus stop and a nearby building, and to rely on vehicles for everything else.

Getting from the Airport into Al Kharj

Al Kharj has no commercial airport of its own, so visitors arrive through Riyadh and continue overland.

Given the infrequent departures and the transfers involved, allow generous time and confirm the day's schedule with SATRANS before you set out.
