Getting Around Musanze
Musanze sits in Rwanda's Northern Province and is the main town serving visitors to the Volcanoes National Park area. It is a compact place, and the practical reality of getting around is simple: most journeys are short, and the two modes that matter most are your own two feet and the moto-taxi.
Walking
Musanze is a small town, and you can comfortably walk from one end to the other along the main road in roughly half an hour to forty minutes. For most visitors, walking is the default way to reach guesthouses, restaurants, shops and the bus station. It is also the cheapest option and the easiest way to get a feel for the town.
Moto-taxis
Alongside walking, the moto-taxi is the best way to get around Musanze. These motorcycle taxis are readily available and are the natural choice when you are carrying luggage, heading somewhere off the main road, or simply do not want to walk.
- Prices are negotiable with the driver, so agree on a fare before you set off.
- A typical ride across town is inexpensive, so moto-taxis work well even for short hops.
Buses and Public Transport
Musanze is well connected by bus to other parts of Rwanda, and this is how most visitors arrive and leave. There is no local rail, metro or tram network to speak of — intercity buses and moto-taxis cover the ground instead.
From Kigali, several bus companies serve the Kigali–Musanze route, with departures roughly every half hour. The journey takes about two hours. Recommended operators include Virunga Express, Kigali Bus Service, Ritco and International Express.
From Gisenyi, buses run about every half hour bound for Kigali and reach Musanze after roughly an hour and twenty minutes.
Buying a ticket is straightforward but worth doing on the spot rather than in advance:
- Tickets are bought at the main bus station in Nyabugogo in Kigali, where each bus company has its own small office. Look for the signs reading "Kigali–Musanze."
- Don't buy your ticket in advance — go to the bus station and expect to leave in roughly half an hour.
- If you book right before departure, you may end up with a poor seat or have to stand, so allow a little buffer time.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
The reference material for this area describes moto-taxis as the main paid form of local transport, with negotiable fares. Conventional taxis and app-based ride-hailing are not documented here, so plan on arranging your local rides with moto-taxi drivers rather than relying on a hail-from-your-phone service.
Getting In from the Airport
Musanze has no commercial airport of its own, so visitors arrive via Kigali International Airport and continue overland. The standard route is:
- From the airport, make your way to the main bus station at Nyabugogo in Kigali.
- At Nyabugogo, choose one of the bus companies serving the Kigali–Musanze direction — Virunga Express, Kigali Bus Service, Ritco or International Express are recommended.
- Buy your ticket at the company's office at the station rather than in advance, and expect to depart within about half an hour.
- The bus ride to Musanze takes around two hours.
If you are arriving from the west, buses from Gisenyi toward Kigali also pass through Musanze, reaching it in about an hour and twenty minutes.
Practical Tips
- Walk when you can — the town is small and the main road links most of what you need.
- Use moto-taxis for longer hops or with luggage, and agree the fare before you ride.
- For intercity travel, head to the bus station and buy your ticket there rather than booking far ahead.
- Allow roughly two hours for the bus between Kigali and Musanze, and a little extra at the station before departure.
