Getting Around Novomoskovsk
Novomoskovsk is a city in Tula Oblast, Russia, and is organised as the Novomoskovsk Urban Okrug. It is not to be confused with Samar in Ukraine, which was formerly known by the same name. For a visitor, the practical transport picture is straightforward: the city is served by rail and bus links, and most day-to-day movement is by bus, taxi, or on foot.
Rail
Novomoskovsk is connected to the wider Russian rail network, and Russian Railways (РЖД) serves the route toward the city. Long-distance services from Moscow run to nearby rail points rather than directly into Novomoskovsk itself, so a rail trip typically involves a transfer to complete the journey. If you are arriving by train, plan your onward connection in advance rather than assuming a direct service to the city.
Metro and Trams
There is no metro or tram network in Novomoskovsk. Visitors should not expect urban rail of this kind, and should plan around buses, taxis, and walking instead.
Buses and Public Transport
Buses are the main form of public transport for reaching and moving around Novomoskovsk. Services are operated by Avtovokzaly.ru, and the bus station in the city is the arrival point for intercity routes.
- From Moscow: buses depart from Moscow Orekhovo Bus station and arrive at Novomoskovsk station, running roughly hourly.
- Journey time: allow around three hours, though the full trip including transfers can take longer.
- Tickets: book and check schedules through avtovokzaly.ru, which lists the Moscow–Novomoskovsk route. The operator can also be reached by phone on 8-800-775-45-73.
- Transfers: there is no direct bus from Moscow station to Novomoskovsk, so transfers are required.
Because timetables and fares change, confirm details with the operator before you travel.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are available and are a practical option for door-to-door trips, including the journey from Moscow, which takes roughly the same time as driving. Expect taxi fares for that longer intercity run to be substantially higher than bus or rail tickets. Ridesharing through BlaBlaCar is another option on the Moscow–Novomoskovsk corridor and is generally cheaper than a private taxi; seats are shared and departures are less frequent, so book ahead.
Walking
Within Novomoskovsk itself, walking is a reasonable way to cover local trips, particularly around the centre and the bus station area. As with any unfamiliar city, keep to well-lit main routes at night and use taxis for longer or late journeys.
Getting from the Airport
From Moscow you have three main choices:
- Bus: from Moscow Orekhovo Bus station to Novomoskovsk station, roughly hourly, with a journey time of about three hours. Book via avtovokzaly.ru.
- Train: services from Paveletsky Rail Terminal toward the Novomoskovsk area, with a transfer required to complete the trip. Russian Railways also serves the route.
- Taxi or rideshare: a direct road journey of a few hours; taxis are the most expensive option, while BlaBlaCar rideshares are cheaper but less frequent.
Whichever option you choose, build in time for the transfer at the end of the rail or bus leg, and verify schedules and fares with the operator before departure, as the aggregator figures are estimates only.
