Getting Around Novosibirsk
Novosibirsk is a large Siberian city on the banks of the Ob River, and its layout reflects its history as a major transport and industrial hub. For a visitor, the good news is that the city centre is compact and walkable, and a mix of metro, rail, tram, bus, and taxi options connects the centre with the wider city and the airport.
On Foot
The city centre is fairly compact, which makes walking a genuinely practical way to cover the core sights. As a rough guide to scale, a walk from the main railway station to Lenin Square takes around 20 minutes. If you are basing yourself centrally, you can expect to reach many of the main squares, streets, and riverside areas on foot without needing transport at all.
Metro
Novosibirsk has a Metro system serving the city centre. It is a useful backbone for moving between central districts and for connecting with the main railway station: the station Novosibirsk-Glavny sits on Ulitsa Shamshurina, with the metro station Garina Mikhailovskogo nearby. If you are arriving by long-distance train, the metro is a convenient way to continue into the centre.
Trams and Trolleybuses
Trams have been part of the city's transport network since the 1930s, and trolleybuses also run on the streets. Both are surface routes that complement the metro and are worth using if your destination lies along a main avenue rather than near a metro stop.
One practical warning for visitors: the trolleybus line on the main street has a terminus called "Airport", but this refers to the disused city airport, not to Tolmachevo (OVB), the airport you will actually fly into. Do not board a trolleybus expecting to reach the international airport.
Buses and Marshrutkas
Public transport in Novosibirsk includes buses and marshrutkas — shared minibuses that run on fixed routes. These fill in the gaps left by the metro and rail lines and are often the most direct option for reaching a specific address. A ride on intra-city public transport costs 35 rubles or less, which makes buses and marshrutkas an inexpensive way to get around. Fares are typically paid on board.
Rail
Novosibirsk's identity was built on the railway, and the main station, Novosibirsk-Glavny, remains a major node. All Trans-Siberian trains stop there, and you can travel from Novosibirsk as far as Moscow, Beijing, Ulaanbaatar, or Vladivostok. There are also regional trains from most nearby cities. For timetables and fares, the RZD website is the place to search. Even if you are not leaving the city, the main station is a useful landmark and transport interchange, with the metro station Garina Mikhailovskogo nearby.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are widely available and are a straightforward option, particularly for trips with luggage or for destinations poorly served by public transport. As a reference point for pricing, a taxi between the airport and the city takes around 30 minutes and should cost about 500 rubles if you negotiate the fare in advance. Agreeing the price beforehand is the practical way to avoid surprises.
Getting from Tolmachevo Airport into the City
Novosibirsk is served by Tolmachevo Airport (OVB), also known as Novosibirsk International Airport, the busiest airport in Siberia. It lies about 16 km from the city centre and handles regular flights from many major Russian cities — including Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Khabarovsk, Vladivostok, Krasnodar, Omsk, Ulan-Ude, Samara, Ufa, and Yekaterinburg — as well as international flights from destinations such as Dushanbe, Istanbul, Baku, Prague, Yerevan, Beijing, Almaty, Osh, Bishkek, and Dubai.
Several options connect the airport with the city:
- Bus #111 runs between the airport and the main train station, Novosibirsk-Glavny, and Avtovokzal, the bus terminal. The journey takes about 30 minutes and costs 35 rubles.
- Minibus #312 also runs between the airport and the main train station.
- Bus #112 connects the airport with the Mega shopping mall (IKEA) and costs 30 rubles.
- Taxi takes around 30 minutes and should cost about 500 rubles if negotiated in advance.
For most visitors heading to the centre, bus #111 or minibus #312 to the main train station is the simplest public transport choice, since the station area connects onward to the metro and the rest of the network. If you are staying near the Mega mall, bus #112 is the direct option.

- Base yourself centrally if you can — much of the centre is walkable.
- Use the metro for fast central connections and to reach the main railway station area.
