Orientation
Shchyolkovo sits on the Klyazma River, a tributary of the Oka, in Moscow Oblast, northeast of Moscow. It is the administrative center of Shchyolkovsky District, and the city dates back to the 16th century. For a visitor, the most useful thing to know is that Shchyolkovo is a satellite town of the capital: most people arrive from Moscow and most onward connections run back through it.
The town has two main rail points that matter to travelers — Voronok and Shchyolkovo stations in the central part — plus Gagarinskaya and Chkalovskaya further out. Which one you want depends on where you are staying, and the choice shapes the rest of your journey.
Getting there from Moscow by rail
The classic approach is by suburban train from Yaroslavsky railway station in Moscow. The ride takes roughly an hour. Trains serve several stations in and around Shchyolkovo, including Voronok, Shchyolkovo, Gagarinskaya and Chkalovskaya.
Faster express services (REX) also run to Voronok and Chkalovskaya, cutting the journey noticeably, but they are far less frequent — only a handful each day. If your schedule is flexible, an express is the comfortable option; otherwise the regular suburban trains are the dependable workhorse.
Since summer 2025, new Ivolga commuter trains have been operating in Shchyolkovo, part of the modernized suburban rolling stock on this corridor.
- From: Yaroslavsky railway station, Moscow
- To: Voronok, Shchyolkovo, Gagarinskaya or Chkalovskaya
- Regular trains: about an hour
- Express (REX): faster, but only a few per day, to Voronok or Chkalovskaya
Getting there from Moscow by bus and minibus
Buses and minibuses (marshrutkas) are the alternative, leaving from the central bus station by the Schyolkovskaya metro station in Moscow. They split into two groups depending on which part of Shchyolkovo you are heading for.
For the central part of town, take minibus 361 or buses 361, 485, 349 and 335. For Chkalovskaya, take minibuses 320 and 380, or buses 320, 321, 360, 378, 380, 381 and 429.
Buses to Chkalovskaya are often the more convenient choice if your final destination lies beyond the center, since you may be able to continue onward without changing. The trade-off is traffic: buses are especially prone to jams on the narrow Shchyolkovo highway, so weigh the time savings against the risk of delay. In practice, many journeys involve changing in Shchyolkovo itself.
- Central Shchyolkovo: minibus 361; buses 361, 485, 349, 335
- Chkalovskaya: minibuses 320, 380; buses 320, 321, 360, 378, 380, 381, 429
- Watch out for: congestion on the Shchyolkovo highway
Regional connections
Shchyolkovo also functions as a hub for neighboring towns, which is useful if you are combining visits rather than making a simple Moscow round trip.
- Ivanteevka: minibus 55 and bus 40; Ivanteevka in turn connects to Pushkino with a change there
- Monino: local trains, expresses and bus 26
- Fryazino: bus 361 from the northeast
- Fryanovo: bus 335
- Chernogolovka: bus 320
- Noginsk: bus 22 to Gromkovo, then bus 320
By car, the routes mirror the bus corridors, and so do the jams on the Shchyolkovo highway. Alternatives include the M8 for the Moscow–Pushkino–Ivanteevka route and the M5 for the Balashikha–Monino–Chkalovsky route.
Getting around town
The central part of Shchyolkovo is small enough to cover on foot, and walking is genuinely the simplest way to get around the core. City buses do exist if you prefer not to walk, but for most short trips within the center they are not necessary.
Intercity buses to Fryazino and beyond cross the city center from south to north, roughly between Voronok and Shchyolkovo stations. If you are changing between services, the walk is easier from Voronok. If you would like a short stroll while you wait, head for the stop further north called Noviy Most (New Bridge), on the far side of the Klyazma from the railway, beside the McDonald's.
Changing at Chkalovsky is fairly straightforward.
- Central area: walkable; city buses available but often unnecessary
- Changing between intercity buses: easier from Voronok
- Pleasant waiting spot: Noviy Most stop, across the Klyazma near the McDonald's
- Chkalovsky interchange: simple to navigate
Tickets and passes
As a general rule for this region, buy your ticket at the station or from the driver or conductor on board, and keep small change handy for minibuses. Confirm current arrangements locally when you arrive, since these details change.
Arriving from the airport
The reference material does not describe a direct airport-to-Shchyolkovo connection. In practice, the airport leg is handled in Moscow: you reach the city first, then continue to Shchyolkovo by suburban train from Yaroslavsky railway station or by bus or minibus from the central bus station by the Schyolkovskaya metro station. Allow generous time for the combination, and treat the Moscow transfer as the part of the journey most likely to run long.
Practical tips
- Decide early whether your destination is central Shchyolkovo or Chkalovskaya — it determines both your train station and your bus route.
- Prefer the train if you are heading into the center; prefer the bus only when it drops you closer to your final stop.
- Build in slack for road traffic if you travel by bus, especially along the Shchyolkovo highway.
- If you are connecting between regional buses, plan to change at Voronok rather than in the middle of town.
- Note that the central bus station in Moscow has been subject to reconstruction, with temporary platforms and relocated long-distance services; check the current situation before relying on a specific departure point.
