Getting Around Nalchik

Nalchik is a compact city in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, and its central areas are easily explored on foot. For longer hops across town, visitors can rely on minibuses and other public transport, or call a taxi. The city itself has no metro or tram system, so ground-level transport is the way to go.

On Foot

Walking is the simplest way to get around central Nalchik. The city is easily explored on foot, so many of the places a visitor is likely to want to reach can be covered without any vehicle at all. Comfortable shoes are worthwhile, since the city sits at an elevation in the foothills and you may find yourself covering a fair amount of ground over the course of a day.

Public Transport

Nalchik does not have a metro or tram network, so public transport means road-based services. Minibuses are available and are the main form of shared transport within the city. They run on fixed routes and are a practical, low-cost option for covering distances that are too long to walk comfortably.

For travel beyond the city, the bus station is the place to head: regular services run to destinations across the North Caucasus and southern Russia. Note that Grozny is roughly a five-hour trip by bus.

Taxi and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a convenient fallback when minibuses do not go where you need, or when you are travelling with luggage or late in the day. As in most Russian cities, you can flag a taxi on the street or arrange one by phone; ride-hailing apps are also widely used. Agree on the fare or confirm it in the app before setting off, and keep small change handy.

Arriving by Air

Nalchik Airport (NAL) sits just northeast of the city, only a few kilometres from the centre, which makes the transfer into town short and straightforward. The airport is served by UTAir, which operates flights to and from Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and by Pobeda, which flies to and from Moscow.

For a wider choice of flights, many travellers use Mineralnye Vody Airport (MRV), about 105 km north of Nalchik. It offers many more flight options than Nalchik's own airport. From Mineralnye Vody you can continue to Nalchik by road or by train, since the railway line between the two cities is served by the daily Moscow train.

Arriving by Train

Nalchik has a railway station with a daily service to and from Moscow, a journey of around 34 hours with stops at cities including Mineralnye Vody and Voronezh. If you are arriving from the north or connecting from Mineralnye Vody, the train is a comfortable alternative to the bus.
