Getting Around Târgu Mureș
Târgu Mureș is the seat of Mureș County in Transylvania and lies on the Mureș River. For a visitor, the city is compact enough that a mix of walking, buses and taxis covers almost everything you will want to do, and the airport is a short trip outside town.
Arriving by Train
The train station sits southwest of the centre. It is the anchor of the city's rail connections and is also where you will find one of the main bus terminals, so arriving by rail puts you in a convenient spot for continuing into the city.
- Direct services link Târgu Mureș with Brașov, Bucharest, Timișoara and, internationally, Budapest.
- Cluj-Napoca is reachable either by a direct train or with a transfer and a layover, so check both options when planning.
- Tickets are inexpensive by Western European standards.
Arriving by Bus
Intercity coaches are a practical alternative to the train, and the city has several bus terminals serving different operators. Note that they are not all in the same place.
- Autogara Duda Trans is at the train station on Piața Gării, handy if you are connecting from rail.
- Autogara Voiajor lies south of the train station and is where most intercity buses start and arrive.
- Autogara Transport Local / Siletina on Strada Bega, further south again, handles frequent services to and from Brașov (via Sighișoara) and Cluj-Napoca.
Because the terminals are spread out, confirm which one your coach uses before you set off, and allow time to get between them if you are connecting.
Getting Around by Bus
Local buses are by far the cheapest way to move around the city. Tickets are bought as single journeys or as a day ticket, and the day ticket is the better value if you plan to make several trips. The route a bus serves is posted on the front window of the vehicle, so you can check it as it pulls in.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are widely available and metered, with rates that are low by international standards. Drivers typically speak Romanian and Hungarian, and many are also fluent in English, so communicating your destination is rarely a problem. Ride-hailing apps are a convenient alternative if you prefer to fix the price in advance rather than flag a cab on the street.
Walking and Cycling
The central area is walkable, and many of the sights, squares and riverside spots are close enough together to cover on foot. If you want to cycle, there is a free bike rental at the football stadium: you can borrow a bike for a couple of hours at no charge, but you will need to sign a contract in Romanian and hand over your photo ID as a deposit.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Târgu Mureș International Airport (TGM) lies southwest of the city and is served by Wizz Air flights from Budapest and London-Luton. There are no domestic flights, so virtually all arrivals are international. From the terminal, taxis and ride-hailing are the most straightforward way into town; the local bus network is the cheapest option if you are travelling light and not in a hurry. Because the airport is outside the city, budget a little time for the transfer and confirm your onward transport before you land, as options are more limited than at a major hub.
Practical Tips
- Keep small change handy for bus tickets.
- Buy a day ticket if you expect to make more than a couple of bus journeys.
- Check which bus terminal your intercity coach uses before travelling between them.
- Bring your photo ID if you plan to use the free bike rental.
- Taxis are metered and inexpensive, and English is often spoken by drivers.
