Getting around Sector 4

Sector 4 is one of the administrative districts of Bucharest, Romania, covering quarters such as Berceni, Giurgiului, Olteniței, Progresul, Timpuri Noi, Tineretului and Văcărești. It also contains some of the city's best-known green spaces, including Carol Park, Tineretului Park and the Văcărești Nature Park. For a visitor, the practical question is how to move between these places and the rest of the city, and the good news is that Sector 4 is served by the same mix of buses, trams, metro, taxis and walking routes that Bucharest relies on as a whole.

How visitors move around

Most trips around Sector 4 and into neighbouring districts are made on public transport, by taxi or ride-hailing, or on foot. The district is well connected to the wider city, and journeys between sectors are short enough that several different modes are realistic for the same trip. As a rule of thumb, buses are the cheapest way to get around, while taxis are the fastest.

Rail, metro and trams

Bucharest's public transport network is run by Societatea de Transport București STB SA, the city's public transport authority. Trams are part of that network and are a useful way to cover longer stretches along a single corridor. For example, tram line 10, operated by STB SA, runs between Vatra Luminoasa and Romprim, with a direct service departing roughly every ten minutes each day; the journey takes around half an hour. Trams are a good option when your origin and destination both sit along the same line, since you avoid the traffic that buses can get stuck in.

The metro is the backbone of longer cross-city journeys, and the rail network connects Bucharest with the rest of Romania. For a visitor staying in Sector 4, the practical approach is to use the metro or rail for the long leg of a trip and then switch to a tram, bus or taxi for the final stretch.

Buses and other public transport

Buses are the most flexible form of public transport in the district and the cheapest way to travel. STB SA operates the main bus routes, and services are frequent: on some corridors a bus departs as often as every five minutes, daily, with journeys of roughly half an hour between points in different sectors. A single fare is inexpensive — on the order of about £1 — which makes buses the default choice for budget-conscious visitors.

Alongside STB SA, other operators run services on certain routes. S.C. Serviciul Transport Voluntari, for instance, also serves some of the same corridors, though with less frequent departures — around every thirty minutes. If you are relying on a specific route, it is worth checking which operator runs it and how often it comes.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis are the fastest way to cross the district and are reasonably priced for short hops — a journey of a few kilometres typically costs only a few pounds and takes around ten minutes. Several taxi companies operate in Bucharest, including Cristaxi (0219455, cristaxi.ro), Meridian Taxi (+40 730.33.9444, meridiantaxi.ro) and Taxi 2000 (+40 72 394 9494, taxi2000.ro). Ride-hailing apps work in the city as well, and are a convenient option if you would rather not call a dispatcher. Taxis are best used for short trips, late-night journeys, or when you are carrying luggage.

Walkability

Sector 4 is walkable in the sense that many everyday destinations — parks, local shops, residential streets — sit close together. Walking is one of the four realistic ways to travel between sectors, though a full cross-sector walk is long: a route of roughly five miles takes about an hour and forty minutes on foot. That makes walking ideal for exploring a single neighbourhood or park, but less practical as a way to cross the city. The district's parks, particularly Carol Park, Tineretului Park and the Văcărești Nature Park, are pleasant places to spend time on foot.

Getting from the airport into the city

Bucharest's main airport lies outside Sector 4, so arriving visitors will need to continue into the city by public transport, taxi or ride-hailing. The same principles apply as for travel within the city: buses and the metro are the cheapest options, while taxis are the fastest and most convenient if you have luggage. Once you reach the city, STB SA's bus and tram network, the metro, and taxis will get you to your accommodation in Sector 4. Because Sector 4 has a large supply of accommodation, you should have plenty of choice about where to base yourself, and from there the district's buses, trams and taxis make it easy to reach the parks and the rest of Bucharest.
