Getting from the Airport to the City
Faro Airport serves as the primary gateway to the Algarve region. For travelers arriving by plane, there are convenient local bus options to reach the city center. Specifically, buses 14 and 16 run frequently—approximately every 30 minutes—connecting the airport with downtown Faro and continuing on to Praia de Faro beach.
Navigating the City
Faro is a highly walkable destination for tourists. The downtown area is compact, and the primary transportation hubs are located in close proximity to one another; both the train station and the main bus station are situated within a few hundred meters of each other and just a short walk from the heart of the city.
Public Transportation Networks
Several options are available for moving around the local area and reaching neighboring destinations:
- Buses: Local transit is managed by Proximo, with specific lines (14 and 16) serving the city, the airport, and the beach. Tickets can be purchased directly from the driver. For regional travel connecting Faro to other cities within the Algarve, the Vamus Algarve company operates the bus network.
- Trains: The rail system is a practical way to reach nearby towns, particularly those to the east such as Olhão, Fuseta, and Tavira. The Estação de Faro station features amenities including a ticket office, a waiting area, a cafe, and a luggage storage service located in the tourist agency on Platform 1.
- Ride-Hailing: For those preferring door-to-door service, both Uber and Bolt are available to operate within the town.
Car Travel and Parking
While driving is an accessible way to explore the Algarve region due to clear road signage and a high number of non-toll roads, parking in the city center can be challenging. Most parking spots near shopping centers and restaurants require payment. However, there are free parking options available: one located next to the bus station (near Hotel Faro) and a large free lot situated behind the old town in the direction of Olhão.
Water Transport
Faro offers several boat options for reaching nearby islands and beaches:
- Praia de Faro: Regular ferries run to this beach on a peninsula near the airport during the high season.
- Ilha Deserta: Accessible via ferry or a faster shuttle boat service.
- Ilha do Farol and Ilha da Culatra: These islands have regular ferry services during the summer months.
- Tours: Various hop-on/hop-off, tour, and water taxi services are available through booths located at the harbor on Avenida de República.
