Getting Around Ponce
Ponce is Puerto Rico's second-largest city, and its historic core is compact enough that most visitors spend their days on foot. For anything beyond the center, you'll rely on a mix of taxis, ride-hailing, buses, and—if you plan to explore the island—a rental car.
Walking the Historic Center
The downtown area is compact and very attractive to explore on foot, with quality sidewalks throughout the historic center. Many museums and restaurants sit within a very short distance of the central plaza, Plaza Las Delicias, which is the natural anchor for a walking day. If you're staying downtown, you can comfortably cover the main sights without any vehicle at all.
Beyond the center, walking becomes less practical. For outlying areas such as the La Guancha Boardwalk or Barrio Playa, plan on a taxi, ride-hailing, or a car instead.
Buses and Public Transport
Public transportation in Ponce is limited and pretty much non-existent by the standards of a large city, though a local bus network does operate. The public transit system is known as SITRAS. Local buses run on weekdays from early morning until around 9 p.m., and on Saturdays and holidays from around 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., with departures roughly every 15–20 minutes.
- Fares and payment: A single ride costs about 75¢, payable in cash or with a prepaid card. A daily pass is available for unlimited rides.
- Who uses it: The system is cheap—generally under a few dollars per ride and under a few dollars more for a day pass—but it is mainly used by students and elderly residents and is less convenient for long distances.
- Tourist trolley: A separate trolley system serves the historic district on a set schedule with multiple daily departures. It's popular with tourists and is a relaxed way to loop the downtown sights.
There is also a touristy "train" that does a loop of the downtown, which is a good option if you want an overview of the center without much walking.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Cabs are cheap and plentiful should you need one, and many museums and restaurants are within a very short distance of the central plaza. Taxis and Uber both operate in the area, and Uber typically has short wait times. Costs vary by distance and time of travel.
For longer trips, a private taxi transfer is an option—for example, a transfer from San Juan Airport to Ponce is quoted at a flat rate for up to six passengers, with free cancellation up to 24 hours prior. Such services are stroller accessible and allow service animals, though they are not wheelchair accessible.
Rental Cars
If you want to explore beyond the city, a rental car is the most flexible choice. Agencies present in Ponce include Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, Enterprise, and Target Rent A Car. The minimum rental age ranges from 21 to 25 depending on the agency.
- Rates: Expect roughly $40–50 per day at the budget end, with economy, standard, and compact categories running higher; some agencies start from around $34 per day.
- Shuttle service: Target Rent A Car offers shuttle service to San Juan International Airport and Mercedita International Airport, plus insurance-replacement and long-term rentals.
- Driving notes: Gas is sold by the liter. Car theft is common, and rental cars are equipped with antitheft double-locking mechanisms. Follow local traffic laws.
- Parking: Parking can be quite a challenge at times, so factor that into any driving plan.
As a rough comparison, renting a car for two days can work out cheaper than a single long cab ride, before you add gas and parking.
Cycling
Cycling is possible but not always easy: Puerto Rico's roads can be difficult due to traffic and road conditions, so a helmet and attention to traffic rules are advised. The Hilton Ponce Beach & Golf Resort offers free bike rentals. Scenic coastal roads and the Ponce Preserve bike paths—with boardwalks, nature playgrounds, and an observation tower—are among the better places to ride.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Ponce is served by Mercedita International Airport (PSE), which is a quick cab ride from downtown. The airport offers daily flights to the mainland US, with JetBlue operating direct flights to New York JFK and Orlando.
From Mercedita, your options into the city include taxi, public transport, private transfer, and shared airport shuttles that can be booked in advance. Because the airport sits close to the city, the transfer is short whichever option you choose.
If you're arriving at San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport instead, note that Ponce is reachable by car via the main island expressway—a modern, convenient highway with restaurants and shops readily available along the trip. A private transfer from San Juan Airport to Ponce is quoted at a flat rate for up to six passengers.
Públicos: Shared Vans for Longer Trips
Ponce has a large público terminal at the intersection of Calle Unión and Calle Vives, a few blocks north of Plaza Las Delicias. Públicos are shared vans that connect Ponce with other towns, including San Juan; departures for San Juan leave from pier 5A, mostly early in the morning. You can call Chóferes Unidos de Ponce to make a reservation, and they can also pick you up for a small extra fee. This is a useful, low-cost option if you're traveling between cities rather than within Ponce itself.
Practical Summary
- Best for downtown: Walking, plus the tourist trolley or downtown "train" for an easy loop.
- Best for outlying areas: Taxi, Uber, or a rental car.
- Cheapest: The local bus network, though it's less convenient for long trips.
- Best for exploring the island: A rental car, ideally booked ahead and paired with a plan for parking.
