Getting Around Elbląg
Elbląg is a compact city, and much of what a visitor wants to see sits close together. The Old Town and the main historic monuments are within easy reach of one another, so walking is a practical and pleasant way to cover the centre. For the one trip that is genuinely awkward on foot, public transport fills the gap neatly.
Trams
Elbląg has a tram network, but it is not extensive. Its most useful role for visitors is the link it provides between the PKP railway station — and the adjacent PKS bus station — and the town centre. That stretch is otherwise quite a long walk, so the tram is worth knowing about if you arrive by train or coach with luggage. Tickets can be bought from the newsagent next to the railway station.
Buses and Other Public Transport
The PKS bus station sits next to the railway station, which makes transfers between long-distance coach and rail straightforward. Elbląg can be reached from other large Polish cities by bus, so coach services are a realistic option for arriving in the city as well as for getting around once you are there.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
As in most Polish cities, taxis are generally available, but you should confirm locally on arrival rather than rely on assumptions.
Walkability
This is Elbląg's strong point. The main attractions are very near each other, and walking is good enough for getting between them. The rebuilt Old Town, with its historic monuments including the Market Gate and St. Nicholas Cathedral, is best explored on foot. The one caveat is the distance between the station area and the centre — that is the journey where you will want the tram rather than your own two feet.
Getting There
By train: There are direct regional trains from Gdańsk and Gdynia. Some slower long-distance TLK trains also call at Elbląg, while high-speed EIP and EIC trains require a change in nearby Malbork. A seasonal train between Kaliningrad and Gdańsk also calls here. The railway station is the hub for onward local transport, with the tram to the centre and the PKS bus station right alongside.
By bus: Elbląg can be reached from other large cities of Poland by bus, arriving at the PKS station next to the railway station.
By car: The E7 road from Gdańsk to Warsaw runs past Elbląg, roughly an hour out of Gdańsk.
From the Airport
Elbląg has no airport of its own. The nearest international airports are in Gdańsk, Kaliningrad, Warsaw and Bydgoszcz. Of these, Gdańsk is the most practical gateway for most visitors, given the direct regional rail connections from Gdańsk and Gdynia to Elbląg. From Warsaw or Bydgoszcz you would be looking at a longer onward journey, and from Kaliningrad the seasonal rail link is the relevant option.
