Getting around Zabrze
Zabrze is a sprawling industrial city in the Silesian conurbation, and it sits within Metropolis GZM, a large metropolitan union of cities, towns and suburban villages. That matters for visitors because transport here is organised on a metropolitan rather than a strictly city-by-city basis: the same tickets and the same operator cover Zabrze and its neighbours, so you can move between Zabrze, Katowice, Gliwice, Bytom and Ruda Śląska without buying a new ticket for each town.
Who runs public transport
Almost all buses and trams across the GZM cities are run by Zarząd Transportu Metropolitalnego (ZTM), which uses a unified ticket system across the whole area. Rail services are provided separately by Koleje Śląskie. For a visitor, the practical upshot is simple: buy a ZTM ticket and it will work on the buses and trams you are likely to use, while train journeys are ticketed as rail travel.
For the detail of ticket types, prices, and where to buy them, the guidance for Katowice applies to Zabrze as well, since both are part of the same ZTM network.
Trams
Trams are the classic way to move between the GZM towns, and they are a genuinely useful option for reaching Zabrze from Bytom. They are a slower choice if you are coming from Chorzów or Katowice, so weigh them against the train for longer hops.
Within Zabrze, the central tram stop is Plac Wolności. It is the place to change between most of the tram lines serving the city, though not every line connects there, so check your route if you need to transfer.
Buses
Buses fill in the rest of the network, and Zabrze has a purpose-built hub for them: the interchange station about 200 m west of the railway station. It has a new station building with a waiting area and multi-level parking, which makes it a comfortable place to start or end a journey. If you arrive by train and need to continue by bus, this is where you go.
Long-distance coaches also serve Zabrze, though not all of them stop here. Flixbus uses the Rondo Sybiraków stop, and Sindbad uses Plac Warszawski. If your route does not call at Zabrze, the usual workaround is to change in Katowice.
Trains
Zabrze's railway station is central to this straggling city, which makes it a handy anchor point, though it has few facilities of its own. Trains from Katowice are frequent and continue on to Gliwice, so the city sits on a well-served corridor rather than at the end of a branch line.
Long-distance trains passing through the region generally call at Zabrze. In practice, though, you will often change at Katowice when coming from the east (Kraków, Warsaw or Gdańsk) or at Gliwice when coming from the west (Berlin or Wrocław).
Taxis and ride-hailing
Your most dependable options are to ask at your accommodation or at the railway station.
Walking and cycling
Zabrze is described as a straggling city, which is a fair warning that walking works well within a district but less well for crossing from one end of town to another. Plan to combine walking with a tram or bus for longer hops.
For two wheels, Metrorower is a public bicycle-sharing system covering the whole Metropolis GZM, with stations spread across the area including a number in Zabrze. It is a flexible way to cover medium distances without waiting for a vehicle.
Getting in from the airport
The nearest airport is Katowice (KTW). From there you can reach Zabrze directly by bus using the M16/M116 service, which runs roughly hourly on workdays and every two hours at weekends, including at night. Alternatively, travel via Katowice or Gliwice city centre and connect onwards.
From Kraków airport (KRK), there is no direct link to Zabrze. You travel via Kraków city centre and continue from there.
Arriving by road
If you are driving, the approach depends on where you are coming from. From Kraków and points east, follow the E40 to Katowice and then Hwy 902. From Warsaw, take the E75 / A1 southwest past Częstochowa and Bytom. From Berlin, follow the E40 southeast past Wrocław.
