Getting Around Sosnowiec

Sosnowiec sits in the heart of the Upper Silesian conurbation, so getting around the city and reaching its neighbours is mostly a matter of using the shared metropolitan transport network. The practical sections below cover the modes you are most likely to use as a visitor.

Public Transport: The Transport GZM Network

Public transport in Sosnowiec is run by Transport GZM, the metropolitan operator that serves Sosnowiec together with neighbouring cities such as Katowice, Będzin, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Czeladź, Mysłowice, Chorzów and Gliwice. Because the network is shared across the conurbation, a single journey can easily carry you from Sosnowiec into Katowice or another nearby city without buying a separate ticket for each municipality.

Tickets are shared across most buses, trams and trolleybuses in the GZM network. You can buy them through ticket machines, at selected points of sale, and via mobile apps. Always check the current tariff before you travel, since fares and ticket types can change.

For planning, use the GZM journey planner to see current timetables and any disruptions. Useful stops to know include:

A full stop list is available through Transport GZM.

Trams

Trams are a core part of moving around Sosnowiec and linking it with neighbouring towns. Main tram lines through the city include:

Routes may change during track works, so rely on the current GZM timetable rather than printed or old online descriptions.

Buses

Local and metropolitan buses are part of the Transport GZM network, and bus M4 is one of the main routes between Katowice and Sosnowiec — journey times vary with traffic. Long-distance coach services also serve the city: FlixBus stops in the area of the main railway station, so search for “Sosnowiec, Dworzec PKP” and confirm the exact departure point in the operator’s system.

Rail

Sosnowiec Główny is the main railway station, located in the city centre. It handles regional, long-distance and some international services. Frequent regional trains link Sosnowiec Główny with Katowice, Gliwice, Zawiercie and Częstochowa. Long-distance trains run towards Warsaw, Gdańsk, Gdynia, Wrocław, Kraków, Bielsko-Biała, Bohumín, Prague and Vienna, depending on the timetable season.

Other stations in the city include Sosnowiec Południowy, south of the centre; Sosnowiec Dańdówka in the southern part of the city; Sosnowiec Porąbka in the east; Sosnowiec Kazimierz in the Kazimierz Górniczy district; and Sosnowiec Jęzor Południowy on the south-eastern edge. For some southern and eastern districts, local trains on the Sędziszów / Olkusz route may stop at Sosnowiec Południowy, Dańdówka or Kazimierz instead of Główny.

Check departures for the exact station, as rail works and timetable corrections may change platforms and routes.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

As a general rule for a city of this size, taxis are available, but you should confirm current options locally.

Walking

The main railway station and central stops such as Sosnowiec Aleja Zwycięstwa and Sosnowiec Małachowskiego are in the centre, which suggests the central area is navigable on foot, but no further claims can be made from the available information.

Bikes and E-Scooters

Metrorower is the GZM metropolitan public bike-share system, operating across Sosnowiec and many other cities in the metropolis. Rental is via the app. A standard ride is charged by time, and subscriptions include 60 free minutes per day. Public transport season-ticket holders may also have daily free minutes after account verification. Check the current price list before using the system.

Sosnowiec has useful cycle links towards Katowice, Będzin, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Stawiki, the Przemsza riverside and the Three Emperors’ Corner.

Commercial e-scooter systems also operate in Sosnowiec. Use the operator’s app to check the current zone, parking rules and charges.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport (KTW) is about 24 km north of Sosnowiec. It has domestic, European and holiday flights, including Mediterranean and Red Sea destinations. Public transport to Sosnowiec is by Transport GZM bus M19 and by rail via the airport-area station.

Kraków John Paul II International Airport (KRK) is about 65–70 km east. There is no direct rail link to Sosnowiec; usually travel via Kraków or Katowice.

Arriving by Road

Sosnowiec is a major road junction in the conurbation. Main routes include E75, S86/DK86 towards Katowice and Tychy, DK79 towards Bytom, Jaworzno and Kraków, DK94 towards Dąbrowa Górnicza, Olkusz, Kraków and Wrocław, and S1 towards Bielsko-Biała, Pyrzowice Airport and Zwardoń. The A4 and A1 motorways run nearby. From Kraków, take A4 west; from Wrocław, take A4 east; from Warsaw, take the routes south-west towards the Upper Silesian conurbation. Traffic is heavy on S86 between Sosnowiec and Katowice during peak hours.

Parking in the centre is mostly in small street-side or municipal car parks rather than large park-and-ride sites.
