Getting Around Gorzów Wielkopolski

Gorzów Wielkopolski is a compact city on the Warta River in western Poland, and its centre is small enough that most visitors can cover the main sights on foot. For anything beyond the centre, the city has a straightforward public transport system of buses, plus taxis and a well-located main railway station.

Walking the City Centre

The centre of Gorzów is very compact and thus manageable on foot. The main square in the old town, the cathedral, and the surrounding streets are all within easy walking distance of one another, so a visitor based centrally can treat walking as the default way to get around.

The main railway station sits in the western part of the city centre, just a short walk from the main square in the old town, which makes arriving by train convenient for exploring on foot. The bus station is also close by, just north of the centre and right next to the train station.

Public Transport: Buses

Public transportation in Gorzów is provided by MZK, the city's municipal transport operator. The network is bus-based, so buses are the mode to look for if you want to travel beyond the walkable centre.

If you plan to make several trips over the course of a stay, the seven-day ticket is the practical option; for occasional journeys, single tickets bought as you go are the simplest choice.

Rail Connections

Gorzów Wielkopolski has a main railway station in the western part of the city centre, served by Polish State Railways. There are direct train connections from many large Polish cities, though almost all of them require a change of trains, so it is worth checking your route in advance rather than assuming a single through service.

There are direct connections between Gorzów Wielkopolski and Zielona Góra, a journey that takes roughly two to two and a half hours. There are also some connections to Berlin, Germany, which makes the city reachable by rail from across the border.

Note that the city has no metro and no tram network; rail here means the national railway station, and local movement within the city is handled by buses and on foot.

Buses and Long-Distance Coach Travel

The bus station is located very near the train station, just north of the city centre, so the two main arrival points are effectively side by side. There are many domestic connections, and buses are often faster than the train because rail journeys frequently require a change. International coach connections are also available.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

As in other Polish cities of this size, taxis are a practical option for short trips across town or for reaching the station with luggage, and you can expect to find taxis at the station and in the centre. If you want to use a ride-hailing app, check availability locally on arrival, as coverage varies by city.

Arriving by Car

Gorzów Wielkopolski is easy to reach by car from Szczecin, Poznań and Berlin, and the city has good road infrastructure. The main practical caution is parking: as in every large Polish city, parking in the city centre can be a problem at times, since there are few parking places relative to demand. If you are driving in, plan to park outside the immediate centre or check your accommodation's parking arrangements in advance.

Getting In from the Airport

The nearest airport is Zielona Góra Airport (IEG), located around 4 km from Babimost, a town close to Zielona Góra. It has daily flights to Warsaw operated by LOT Polish Airlines, and negotiations are being held to introduce some international flights within the European Union.

Because the airport serves a limited route network, many visitors will instead arrive via a larger Polish airport and continue to Gorzów by train or coach. Whichever airport you use, the practical arrival points in Gorzów are the train station and the adjacent bus station in the western part of the city centre, both within a short walk of the old town.
