Getting Around Sialkot
Sialkot is a compact, busy manufacturing city in Punjab, and getting around it is generally straightforward. There is no metro or tram system in the city, so visitors rely on a mix of auto rickshaws, taxis, ride-hailing apps, buses, and their own two feet. The sections below cover what exists, how the pieces connect, and how to reach the city from its airport.
Rail Connections
Sialkot has a railway station, Sialkot Junction, which sits in the city centre — convenient if you are arriving by train or staying nearby. The only direct long-distance train to Sialkot is the Allama Iqbal Express from Karachi. If your journey starts elsewhere, note that the nearest major railway junctions are in Wazirabad and Narowal, so you may need to connect through one of those.
There is also a smaller station at Sambrial, which is useful specifically if you are travelling to or from the international airport, since it lies close to the airport. From Sambrial, plenty of taxis and rickshaws are available to connect you with the airport.
Buses and Public Transport
Public transport within Sialkot is limited but usable. Some air-conditioned buses roam around the city; they pick up passengers wherever they see them, and they are described as cheap and comfortable. There have also been plans to introduce a metro bus service in the future, but as of now no metro bus system is in operation.
For intercity travel, Sialkot is linked with the National Highway (N-5) via Gujranwala and via Wazirabad, and the M11 motorway connects Sialkot directly to Lahore, with interchanges near major urban centres along the route. The motorway links up with the Lahore–Islamabad Motorway (M2) near Lahore via the Lahore Bypass. Daewoo bus service is available from Sialkot to other cities in the country, including Lahore and Rawalpindi/Islamabad — a good option if you are heading onward rather than staying in the city.
Auto Rickshaws, Taxis and Ride-Hailing
The most common means of public transport in Sialkot is the auto rickshaw. They are widely available and are the default way many locals get around for short trips. Taxis are also available in plenty.
For app-based transport, Careem ride-hailing is popular among young people and foreigners — a useful choice if you prefer a fixed fare and don't want to negotiate. Rental car service is available near the bus station and under the Jinnah Park Flyover, which is handy if you want to drive yourself or hire a car with a driver for the day.
Walking
Sialkot Junction railway station is in the city centre, so if you are based near the middle of town, some errands and sightseeing can be done on foot. Beyond the central area, however, the city spreads out and the practical options thin out — auto rickshaws and taxis are the realistic way to cover longer distances. Treat walking as a good option for short hops in the centre rather than as a way to cross the whole city.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Sialkot International Airport (SKT) is Pakistan's first privately owned public airport and lies west of the city. It has daily flights from most major cities in Pakistan as well as from regional hubs, so it is a realistic arrival point for domestic and regional travellers.
To reach the city from the airport, the most practical connections are by road: taxis and auto rickshaws serve the airport, and the nearby Sambrial railway station — close to the airport — is an option if you want to continue by train, with plenty of taxis and rickshaws available there to link you to the airport. If you are arriving by air and heading into Sialkot itself, arranging a taxi or ride-hailing car, or taking a rickshaw, is the simplest approach.
Practical Tips
- Carry small change for auto rickshaws and buses; these are the cheapest ways to move around.
- Use Careem if you want an app-based, metered alternative to negotiating with a rickshaw or taxi driver.
- If you are flying in or out, remember that Sambrial station is the rail stop closest to the airport, while Sialkot Junction serves the city centre.
- For onward travel to Lahore, Rawalpindi or Islamabad, the Daewoo bus service and the M11 motorway are the main options.
- Plan on taxis or rickshaws for anything beyond the central area — the city is not uniformly walkable.
