Understanding how Chichawatni is laid out

Chichawatni is a city in the Sahiwal District of Punjab, Pakistan, and serves as the administrative centre of Chichawatni Tehsil. It sits near the old Grand Trunk Road, roughly 45 km from the district capital, Sahiwal. For a visitor, the most useful thing to know is that the town is compact and oriented around a few key anchors: the Grand Trunk Road, the railway station, and the surrounding agricultural countryside. Punjabi is the most widely spoken language locally, though Urdu is also commonly spoken, which makes getting around and asking for directions straightforward for most visitors.

Rail

Chichawatni has its own railway station, and rail is one of the most practical ways to arrive in or leave the town. The original station dates back to 1918, but it was built in a largely impassable forest to the north of town and was difficult to reach; a new, more accessible station was constructed in 2007. If you are travelling by train, plan your onward movements around this newer station rather than any older location.

Chichawatni lies in the broader Sahiwal District rail corridor. The neighbouring city of Sahiwal sits on the main Lahore–Karachi railway and has direct train connections to Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Samasata and Madina-tul-Hajjaj. If your journey involves a long-distance train, Sahiwal is the natural hub to connect through, and from there you can reach Chichawatni. Buy your ticket at the station; for longer routes, booking in advance is sensible.

Buses and other public transport

Bus services are frequent in this part of Punjab and run to and from most larger towns. Sahiwal, the district capital, is the main interchange for bus travel in the area, with services linking it to Lahore and Bahawalpur among other places. From Sahiwal you can continue to Chichawatni by bus or by rail.

Within Chichawatni itself, expect the usual mix of local buses, minivans and shared transport that serve Pakistani towns of this size. These are the workhorses for short hops within the city and to nearby villages. Fares are typically paid in cash to the conductor or driver, and there is generally no advance booking or pass system for local services — you simply board and pay as you go.

Taxis and ride-hailing

For point-to-point trips, taxis and rickshaws are the most convenient option, particularly if you are carrying luggage or travelling outside the main routes. As with most towns in the region, it is worth agreeing on the fare before you set off. Ride-hailing apps are widely used across Pakistan's larger cities, but coverage in smaller towns like Chichawatni can be limited, so it is wise to have a local taxi or rickshaw as a fallback rather than relying solely on an app.

Walkability

Chichawatni is a modest-sized city, and central areas around the Grand Trunk Road and the main commercial stretches are reasonably walkable for short distances. The town is also a popular stop-over for visitors heading to the ancient Upper Indus site of Harappa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 20 km away, so some movement around the town on foot is normal. That said, pavements and pedestrian infrastructure are not guaranteed, and traffic on the main roads can be heavy, so use caution and treat walking as a way to cover short local distances rather than a primary way to cross the city.

Getting there from the airport

Chichawatni does not have its own commercial airport, so visitors arrive via one of the larger regional airports and continue overland. The three practical approaches, all routed through Sahiwal, are:

Whichever airport you use, Sahiwal is the key transfer point: it is well connected by both rail and frequent bus services, and from Sahiwal you can reach Chichawatni by train or bus. If you prefer to minimise road travel, the rail option via Sahiwal is a comfortable alternative to the bus.
