Getting Your Bearings
Santa Cruz is the capital of Laguna province and the transport hub of eastern Laguna, so it is a practical base for exploring the towns around Laguna de Bay and the foothills behind them. The town centre sits near the mouth of the Santa Cruz River, which cuts through the middle of town, with two bridges crossing it downtown. Note that the town centre can flood in places during the rainy season when the river or Laguna de Bay overflows, so plan around heavy weather if you can.
Arriving by Bus
Long-distance buses are the main way visitors reach Santa Cruz from Metro Manila and further afield. The bus terminals sit in Barangay Pagsawitan, at the junction where the Calamba–Pagsanjan Road meets the road into downtown.
- DLTB runs frequent departures, roughly every half hour, from its Buendia (Pasay) and Cubao (Quezon City) terminals.
- JAC Liner (formerly Greenstar Express) departs about every 30 minutes from Taft/Buendia in Pasay.
- HM Liner and Worthy Transport run roughly hourly services, leaving from Cubao or Alabang (South Station) and terminating at Pagsawitan, beside the Santa Cruz boundary.
Expect the trip from Metro Manila to take around two hours in good conditions, longer with traffic, and note that Alabang-bound buses make two stopovers in Calamba (Mayapa and SM Calamba/Crossing). Fares are modest and rise with distance from town — roughly ₱40 from Calamba, ₱140 from Alabang, ₱170 from Buendia and ₱190 from Pasay. HM Transport's terminal is on Calamba–Pagsanjan Road in Pagsawitan.
Arriving by Road
If you are driving or being driven in, the usual approach from Manila is via the Calamba–Pagsanjan Road, leaving the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) at the Turbina exit in Calamba. From the east, the Manila East Road loops around Rizal and the lakeside towns of eastern Laguna before joining the Calamba–Pagsanjan Road at Pagsanjan — turn right there for Santa Cruz. From Nagcarlan, a two-lane road runs north to Bubukal Junction. To avoid downtown congestion coming from Calamba, vehicles often turn left at Bubukal Junction (a secondary commercial hub) toward Quezon Avenue and Santa Cruz Bridge.
Getting Around Town
There is no rail, metro or tram network here — Santa Cruz is served entirely by road-based transport, and getting around is a matter of tricycles, jeepneys and your own two feet.
- Tricycles are the primary means of getting around locally, with fares starting at around ₱20.
- Jeepneys also serve the outlying barangays.
- Walking is not really practical beyond short hops such as between the town hall and the parish church — sidewalks are narrow and the heat is intense.
The source material does not describe a taxi or ride-hailing presence in Santa Cruz, so plan on tricycles and jeepneys as your day-to-day options rather than assuming app-based cars will be available.
Jeepneys: The Regional Workhorse
Santa Cruz is a primary jeepney hub for Laguna, and routes run in both directions. Terminals are scattered around the town centre, except for the Lucban-bound jeepneys, which leave from Pagsawitan Junction and Metro Central Mall. Routes include:
- Santa Cruz–Calamba
- Santa Cruz–San Pablo
- Santa Cruz–Pila
- Santa Cruz–Pagsanjan
- Santa Cruz–Lumban
- Santa Cruz–Siniloan (for Paete and the northeast Laguna towns)
- Santa Cruz–Cavinti
- Santa Cruz–Luisiana
- Santa Cruz–Lucban, Quezon Province (via Cavinti and Luisiana)
- Santa Cruz–Magdalena
- Santa Cruz–Majayjay
- Santa Cruz–Liliw
- Santa Cruz–Nagcarlan (via Liliw)
- Santa Cruz–Calumpang (a barangay of Nagcarlan)
These connections make Santa Cruz a convenient jumping-off point for nearby towns — Pagsanjan, Nagcarlan and Liliw, the latter a resort town known for its shoes and slippers.
Practical Tips
- Buy bus tickets at the terminal or on board depending on the operator; fares are paid in cash and scale with distance.
- Allow extra time for the Manila run — traffic can stretch the journey well beyond the usual two hours.
- Keep small bills and coins handy for tricycle and jeepney fares.
- If you are heading to Lucban, go to Pagsawitan Junction or Metro Central Mall rather than the downtown terminals.
- Check conditions during the rainy season, as parts of the town centre can flood.
