Getting Around General Santos
General Santos, known locally as GenSan, is a highly urbanized city on the island of Mindanao and the regional center for commerce and industry in Soccsksargen. For a visitor, the practical reality is that the city runs on road transport: jeepneys, multicabs, tricycles and taxis. There is no rail, metro or tram network to plan around, so your choices come down to which road vehicle suits the trip and your budget.
No Rail, Metro or Tram Network
General Santos has no train, metro or tram system. Getting around the city and reaching it from elsewhere in Mindanao is done entirely by road, sea or air. Plan your itinerary accordingly — there are no rail passes to buy and no stations to navigate.
Jeepneys, Multicabs and Tricycles
These are the main modes of transportation within the city, and they are the default way locals and visitors alike cover short and medium distances.
- Jeepneys and multicabs run the city's core routes and are the workhorses of everyday travel.
- Tricycles handle shorter hops and are useful for reaching places just off the main routes. Fares are in the region of ₱15, so keep small change handy.
- Fares are typically paid in cash to the driver. There is no citywide ticket or stored-value pass to buy, so budget for small cash payments throughout your stay.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
White air-conditioned taxis with meters installed are available in the city, giving you a comfortable, metered alternative to the jeepney and tricycle network. They are a sensible option when you are carrying luggage, travelling in a group, or heading somewhere you do not yet know how to reach by jeepney. Because they are metered, you pay according to the meter rather than negotiating a fare.
Walkability
Walking works best for short trips within a single district or around a specific destination such as a mall or market. For anything longer, or for crossing between different parts of this sprawling city, you will want a jeepney, multicab, tricycle or taxi rather than relying on foot alone.
Arriving by Air: General Santos International Airport
General Santos International Airport (GES) sits on Filipino-American Friendship Avenue and handles daily domestic flights from Manila, Cebu and Iloilo using a mix of medium and large jets. It is the main air gateway to the city.
To get from the airport into the city, the straightforward option is the jeepney:
- Walk out of the airport terminal and you will find the jeepneys waiting in the car park.
- The airport jeepney runs to the bus terminal and costs around ₱50.
From the bus terminal you can connect onward to other parts of the city or to intercity services. If you prefer door-to-door travel with your bags, the metered taxis in the city are the alternative.
Arriving by Sea
The Port of General Santos is served by limited ferry services from Davao City, so arriving by boat is possible but not a frequent option.
Intercity Buses and Vans
General Santos is well connected by road to the rest of Mindanao, and the bus terminal is the hub for these services. Several operators serve the city:
- Yellow Bus Line — from Davao City, Koronadal City and the Upper Valley areas.
- Mindanao Star — from Davao City and Koronadal City.
- Rural Transit — from Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro.
- Husky Bus Lines — from Koronadal and Cotabato City.
Useful practical notes for planning intercity legs:
- Air-conditioned buses to Koronadal take roughly an hour and a half.
- Air-conditioned buses to Davao take up to about three hours; a non-stop service is also available and is faster.
- Rural Transit runs a limited number of daily departures to Cagayan de Oro, with the last leaving in the morning — if that is your route, plan to travel early.
- If you miss the direct Cagayan de Oro departures, you can travel via Tacurong City, from where many buses continue to Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro.
Vans and Jeepneys to Nearby Towns
For shorter regional hops, vans and larger jeepneys fill the gap:
- Vans run from Glan and take about an hour. The van terminal is next to the KCC mall.
- Big jeepneys also run from Lagao Market to Glan.
Practical Summary
- Within the city: jeepneys, multicabs and tricycles are the main modes; tricycle fares are around ₱15. Pay in cash.
- For comfort or luggage: use the white metered air-conditioned taxis.
- From the airport: take the jeepney from the car park outside the terminal to the bus terminal (around ₱50), then continue from there.
- To other cities: head to the bus terminal for Yellow Bus Line, Mindanao Star, Rural Transit or Husky services, or catch a van or large jeepney for nearby towns such as Glan.
- No rail option exists — every trip, local or regional, is by road, sea or air.
