Getting Around Meycauayan
Meycauayan sits just north of Metro Manila in Bulacan, along the North Luzon Expressway and the older MacArthur Highway, and it functions as a hub for jeepneys heading to other Bulacan towns and cities. For a visitor, the practical takeaway is that the city is served mainly by road-based public transport — jeepneys, buses, minibuses, vans, tricycles and taxis — with a rail link still on the way.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Meycauayan has no operating rail, metro or tram service you can use today. An electrified standard-gauge railway running from Metro Manila toward Clark International Airport in Angeles, Pampanga, and New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac, has been under construction since the 2020s, and a station serving Meycauayan is being built along MacArthur Highway. Until that line opens, plan your trip around road transport.
Buses, Minibuses and Vans
Buses and minibuses are the main way to reach Meycauayan from Metro Manila, and they connect with jeepneys for the final leg into the city.
- Buses terminate at Malanday in Valenzuela, where you transfer to jeepneys.
- Minibuses from Trinoma in Quezon City terminate at Sto. Niño in the eastern part of Meycauayan rather than the old town center, but they pass through the Common Terminal, where you can transfer to downtown Meycauayan via the Meycauayan–Sto. Niño jeepney. A one-way minibus fare costs PHP50, and you should be prepared to wait up to an hour before the vehicle fills up.
- Vans and minibuses based at the Common Terminal head to Metro Manila, Malolos and San Fernando in Pampanga.
Jeepneys
Jeepneys are the workhorse of local travel and the easiest way to move between the city proper and the surrounding barangays.
- Jeepneys connect Meycauayan city proper with the neighborhood of Santo Niño to the east, passing through the overpass at the NLEX Meycauayan Exit and stopping at the Meycauayan City Common Terminal.
- Many jeepneys run between Malinta in Valenzuela and other towns in Bulacan, and jeepneys traveling from Monumento in Caloocan to Bulacan also pass through Meycauayan.
- Meycauayan is itself a hub for jeepneys heading to other Bulacan towns and cities such as Angat, Baliwag, Santa Maria, Malolos and Calumpit.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis — both car and motorcycle — and Grab can be used to reach barangays of Meycauayan that directly border Metro Manila. These are a useful option when you want to go door-to-door rather than transfer between jeepneys.
Tricycles and the Common Terminal
The Meycauayan City Common Terminal on Iba Road in Malhacan is the city's multi-purpose transport hub. Tricycles based there serve the city's barangays, it is a stopover for the Meycauayan–Santo Niño jeepney service, and it is where vans and minibuses depart for Metro Manila, Malolos and San Fernando in Pampanga. If you are unsure how to reach a particular barangay, starting at the Common Terminal is the simplest approach.
Walkability
Meycauayan's terrain is generally plain with gentle rolling hills, and the landscape is an interweaving of greenery and concrete road network, with rivers, a natural lake and drainage waterways criss-crossing the area. That said, the practical way to get around is by public transport rather than on foot: the city is spread across many barangays, and the main transport corridors — East Service Road, Meycauayan-Iba Road, Malhacan Road, Malhacan-Libtong Road and Dazo Street — are where you will find public transport stops. Walking is best reserved for short hops within a single barangay or around the Common Terminal.
Getting There from the Airport
Meycauayan lies along the North Luzon Expressway and the older MacArthur Highway running north from Manila, so the journey from the capital's airport is a road trip. The North Luzon Expressway (NLEX, or E1) passes east of the city's downtown, with one exit at the residential and industrial barangay of Malhacan, officially listed as the Meycauayan Exit. A toll-free alternative is the slower and more heavily trafficked MacArthur Highway (Route 1), which passes near Meycauayan's city center.
Once you are on the ground, the pattern is straightforward: take a bus, minibus or van toward Meycauayan or its transport nodes, then transfer to a jeepney or tricycle for the last stretch. Buses terminate at Malanday in Valenzuela with jeepney transfers available, and minibuses from Trinoma terminate at Sto. Niño but stop at the Common Terminal, where the Meycauayan–Sto. Niño jeepney takes you downtown. Taxis and Grab can also bring you directly to barangays bordering Metro Manila.
By Car
If you are driving, NLEX is the fast option via the Meycauayan Exit at Malhacan, though traffic congestion has become common in the area during rush hour. MacArthur Highway is the toll-free alternative, but it is slower and heavily trafficked.
Practical Tips
- Allow extra time during rush hour, especially around the NLEX Meycauayan Exit.
- For minibuses, expect to wait until the vehicle fills up — up to an hour — before departure.
- Use the Common Terminal as your transfer point between minibuses, vans, jeepneys and tricycles.
- Keep small bills handy for jeepney, tricycle and minibus fares.
- If your destination is a barangay bordering Metro Manila, a taxi or Grab may save you a transfer.
