Orientation
Sullana sits in the Chira valley on Peru's north-western coastal plain, about 38 km north of Piura, the regional capital. The Canal Vía runs across the city and serves as a useful landmark for finding your way around. The city is an important commercial centre for the surrounding cotton- and fruit-growing area, and its compact core makes most day-to-day movement straightforward.
Rail, Metro and Trams
There is no rail, metro or tram service in or around Sullana. The Tren de la Costa, a coastal railway linking Sullana to Tacna in the far south, is only a planned project and does not exist as a service you can use. Visitors should plan on road-based transport for every journey.
Buses and Public Transport
Sullana's strength is its intercity bus connections. The city has good bus links northward, south to Piura, and inland to Ayabaca and to La Tina on the Ecuadorian border. Several operators serve the town, including Ittsa Bus, Turismo Tacna Internacional, Lineas Peruanas, Ronco Peru, Transportes Chiclayo, Econociva, Superciva and Excluciva. Most buses stop at the Central Bus Station (Sullana Central Bus Station), which is the natural first stop for arriving travellers.
- Buying tickets: Book several days in advance, as this is the norm for intercity travel. Fares and classes vary by operator, with Economy, Business, First Class and Premium Economy options on some services.
- Onboard: Amenities differ by operator but commonly include air conditioning, power sockets and Wi-Fi, and hand luggage is often free.
- Useful connections: Chiclayo is roughly four hours away by Transportes Chiclayo. Lima is a long overnight-or-longer run of roughly fourteen to nineteen hours depending on operator, departing from Atocongo Bus Station, Flores Bus Station or Gran Terminal Terrestre Plaza Norte in the capital.
- Nearby destinations: Buses also serve Piura, Talara, Chulucanas, Paita, Máncora and Piura Airport.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
For local trips, ask at your accommodation or at the bus station about the options available on the ground.
Walking
The Canal Vía crossing the city is a helpful orientation line, but beyond that, visitors should judge conditions on arrival and rely on local advice for walking routes.
Getting from the Airport into the City
The practical air gateway is Piura Airport, which is served by intercity buses that also connect to Sullana. In other words, you can reach Sullana from the airport by bus rather than by a dedicated city transfer. Confirm schedules and pickup points with your chosen operator when booking, and allow for the road journey north to Sullana.
Practical Tips
- Arrive by bus at the Central Bus Station, where most operators stop, and use it as your orientation point.
- Reserve intercity tickets several days ahead, especially for long-haul routes to Lima.
- Check the class and amenities of your ticket before booking, since these vary considerably between operators.
- If you are flying in, plan your onward leg from Piura Airport by bus and confirm the connection in advance.
