Getting around Almere Stad

Almere Stad is the central district of Almere in Flevoland, and it is laid out on a modern plan: a compact, purpose-built city centre with shops, a theatre, a cinema, restaurants and a waterfront, surrounded by residential areas, offices, industrial zones, parks and a lake. The city hall and a regional hospital are both here. For a visitor, that means most of what you want to see is clustered around the centre, and the wider district is best reached by public transport or bike-friendly streets rather than long walks.

Rail and the wider public transport network

Almere Centrum is the main station serving the district and is the natural hub for arrivals and onward trips. The national rail operator, NS, runs trains from Almere Centrum to Amsterdam Centraal, a straightforward connection for anyone coming from or continuing to the capital. Arriva also serves the Almere–Amsterdam route, though far less frequently than NS.

It is worth knowing that there is no direct metro link between Amsterdam and Almere. A typical public transport journey from Amsterdam involves the metro to a transfer station, then an intercity train onward to Almere Centrum, and then a local bus from the station to your final stop. The metro runs from early morning until around midnight, with frequent departures during the day. Within Almere itself, buses pick up directly outside Almere Centrum station, making the train-to-bus transfer quick and easy.

Buses and local public transport

Buses are the workhorse of local movement in Almere Stad. Bus M2, for example, connects Almere Centrum station with Almere Buiten, calling at the Station Centrum stop in Almere Stad — useful if your accommodation or destination sits away from the centre. Longer-distance bus services also link Almere with Amsterdam: line 329 runs between the Spanningsveld stop in Almere Stad and Amsterdam Amstelstation, departing regularly throughout the day and taking roughly forty minutes. That service is operated by allGo (Keolis), whose website and phone line are the places to check timetables and fares.

For tickets and passes, buy directly from the operator or at the station; Dutch public transport generally works on a single check-in/check-out card system, so a reloadable travel card or a contactless bank card is the simplest option for a visitor moving between train, metro and bus.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis are available in Almere Stad, with local firms such as Taxi Next operating in the area. Ride-sharing through BlaBlaCar is also an option for longer trips such as Almere to Amsterdam, though departures are limited, so book ahead. For most visitors, taxis make sense for late-night arrivals or trips with luggage rather than for everyday getting around.

Walking

The redesigned city centre — with its waterfront, cinema, theatre, shops and restaurants — is compact and pleasant on foot, and the station sits close to the main bus stops, so transfers involve only a short walk. Beyond the centre, the district spreads out into separate residential and industrial areas, so plan to combine walking with a bus or train for anything farther afield.

Getting in from the airport

The reference material does not describe a direct airport connection to Almere Stad. In practice, the sensible approach is to take a train from the airport into the Dutch rail network and change onto an NS service to Almere Centrum, from where local buses or a short walk will get you to your destination. Allow extra time for the change, and check NS timetables on arrival, since services to Almere Centrum run regularly but not constantly.
