Orientation
Zaanstad is a municipality in North Holland, sitting just northwest of Amsterdam, and it forms part of the wider Amsterdam conurbation and metropolitan area. Rather than a single city, it is a conurbation of several towns and villages — Assendelft, Koog aan de Zaan, Krommenie, Westzaan, Wormerveer, Zaandam and Zaandijk — strung out along the river Zaan. Zaandam is the main settlement and the natural base for most visitors. Because the built-up areas follow the river and are surrounded by countryside, you are never far from a rural feel, and getting between the different centres is a normal part of a visit here.
Getting around: the overall picture
For a visitor, Zaanstad is easiest to handle by combining trains for the longer hops between towns with local buses for the last stretch, and on foot for the compact centres and the riverside sights. The rail line threads through the municipality and links the main settlements, while local buses fill in the gaps and connect to Amsterdam. Walking works well within individual centres, but the municipality's stretched-out shape means you should not expect to cover it all on foot.
Rail
Zaanstad is served by a series of railway stations spread across its towns and villages: Zaandam, Zaandam Kogerveld, Koog aan de Zaan, Zaandijk Zaanse Schans, Wormerveer, and Krommenie-Assendelft. This means the train is often the quickest way to move between the different parts of the municipality rather than returning to a single hub.
Zaandam station is the key interchange and is very close to Amsterdam: it is just two stops from Amsterdam Central Station, passing through Amsterdam Sloterdijk on the way. Trains run regularly — roughly four to eight per hour — and service continues until about 01:00, so late-evening travel back to Amsterdam is feasible.
If the Zaanse Schans open-air museum is on your list, the train is the convenient approach. Take a "Sprinter" service with the destination Uitgeest and get off at Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station; from there it is about a ten-minute walk to the museum. These Sprinters run four times per hour on weekdays and half-hourly on Saturdays and Sundays.
Metro and tram
The source material describes no metro or tram network within Zaanstad itself. Visitors should plan around the rail and bus services described here rather than expecting metro or tram lines in the municipality.
Buses
Local buses in the Zaanstad area are operated by Connexxion. They are the practical option for reaching places that sit away from the railway stations and for moving around within Zaandam.
- Lines 92 and 94 run at least four times per hour to Zaandam Centre (Peperstraat Bus Station) and Zaandam Railway Station.
- Line 91 runs from Amsterdam Central Station to the Zaanse Schans open-air museum — a useful direct link if you are coming from Amsterdam by bus rather than train.
Taxis and ride-hailing
The source material does not describe taxi or ride-hailing services in Zaanstad. As a general fallback, taxis are available at the main railway stations, but the documented, reliable ways to get around are the train and the Connexxion buses.
Walkability
Walking is a realistic way to explore individual centres and the riverside attractions — the walk from Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station to the Zaanse Schans museum takes about ten minutes, for example. Zaandam's shopping street, Gedempte Gracht, and the Czar Peter House are in the town itself and suit a stroll. What walking does not suit is covering the whole municipality: Zaanstad is a long, river-following conurbation of separate towns, so use the train or bus for the longer connections and save your walking for once you arrive.
Getting in from the airport
Schiphol Airport has direct trains to Zaandam running twice every hour; these services have the destination Hoorn. At other times, take any train heading to Amsterdam Centraal that stops at Amsterdam Sloterdijk and change there for Zaandam. From Zaandam you can continue onward to the other stations in the municipality, or take a local Connexxion bus to your final destination.
By car
If you are driving, approach from the northern Amsterdam ring-road (Ringweg A10), take the A8 towards Zaanstad/Zaandam, and then follow the signs.
