Getting Around Masaya
Masaya is a compact, culturally rich city known as the "City of Flowers" and the "Cradle of Nicaraguan Folklore." For most visitors, the practical way to experience it is on foot, supplemented by taxis and the bus network that links the city to the rest of Nicaragua. This guide covers how to move around town and how to reach Masaya from the airport in Managua.
Walking
The parts of town that are interesting for tourists are mostly walkable. The historic center has open plazas and colonial churches, and the main market sits next to the central bus station, so you can combine sightseeing and shopping on foot. The Mercado de Artesanías (Craft Market), housed in the old market building, is near the center of the city and only a couple of blocks from the general population market, making it easy to visit both in one outing.
Some destinations lie beyond comfortable walking range. For those, taxis can get you to the malecón and anywhere else you might want to go.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Masaya has no rail, metro, or tram network for visitors to use. The city's historic connection to the railway is a matter of the past, and no such service is available for getting around today. Plan on walking, taxis, or buses instead.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Masaya is well connected to other Nicaraguan cities by bus. Many cities in Nicaragua have buses that take you directly to Masaya. From Managua, two main options serve the route:
- Microbuses: Public minivans known as microbuses run from the UCA terminal (Universidad Centroamericana) in Managua to Masaya for a bit less than US$1.
- Standard buses: Slower standard buses — the old American Bluebird type — also run to and from Masaya at a slightly lower price.
Most buses arrive at the huge and disorderly "bus station" at the edge of Masaya's new market. Note that Google Maps also shows a separate terminal a few blocks to the west, used for buses running between Masaya and UCA in Managua. If you are heading back to Managua, it is worth confirming which terminal your bus departs from.
Because the main market is located next to the central bus station, arriving by bus puts you right at the heart of the city's shopping and a short walk from other central sights.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are the most flexible way to cover longer hops within Masaya, including trips to the malecón and other spots outside the walkable core. They are also the standard option for reaching Masaya from the airport in Managua, where a taxi costs US$20–30. The source material does not describe ride-hailing apps in Masaya, so plan on traditional taxis unless you confirm otherwise locally.
Getting from the Airport into the City
The main international gateway is the airport in Managua (MGA). From there, you have two practical ways into Masaya:
- Taxi: A taxi from the Managua airport to Masaya costs US$20–30.
- Bus via Managua: You can travel into Managua and pick up a microbús from the UCA terminal to Masaya for a bit less than US$1, or a slower standard bus for slightly less. This is the cheaper option but requires getting from the airport to the UCA terminal first.
Whichever you choose, most buses end up at the bus station by Masaya's new market, from which the central sights, the main market, and the craft market are reachable on foot or by a short taxi ride.
Practical Tips
- Base yourself near the center if you want to walk to the plazas, churches, and markets.
- Keep small change handy for microbuses and standard buses.
- If you are returning to Managua by bus, double-check whether your departure point is the terminal by the new market or the separate terminal a few blocks west.
- Use taxis for the malecón and any destination beyond the walkable center.
