Getting Around Enugu: An Overview

Enugu is the capital and largest city of Enugu State in south-eastern Nigeria, and the main ways visitors get around are taxis and buses. The city sits at the foot of the Udi Plateau, and its older residential districts — such as the Government Reserved Area (GRA), laid out during the colonial period — are characterised by meandering narrow roads, so journeys across town can feel slower than the map suggests. The practical guidance below covers the modes you are most likely to use, how they connect, and how to reach the city from its airport.

Rail, Metro and Trams

Enugu has no metro or tram network, and there is no urban rail service for getting around the city itself. Rail does feature in the wider region: the city lies on the railroad from Port Harcourt, far to the south-southwest, a line historically tied to coal shipments. For a visitor, this means rail is not a practical way to move between neighbourhoods or attractions within Enugu — plan on road transport instead.

Buses and Public Transport

Buses are one of the two main forms of transportation in the city. Coal City Shuttle buses run as public transport for Enugu urban, making them the closest thing to a formal city bus service. In addition, most transport enters and leaves the city through Enugu's Ogbete Motor Park, and Garki Motor Park also serves as a transport pick-up point. These parks are the places to head for if you are travelling onward to other towns rather than moving around within the city.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxi cabs are the other main form of transportation in the city, alongside buses. Two categories are worth knowing about:

For a visitor, the yellow-paint rule is the simplest way to tell the two apart at a glance.

Walking

Walking is a reasonable way to cover short distances within a single neighbourhood, but the city's layout works against long pedestrian journeys. Enugu sits at the foot of the Udi Plateau, and parts of the city — notably the older colonial-era residential areas such as the GRA — are built on meandering narrow roads rather than a straightforward grid. Allow extra time for any walk that crosses between districts, and consider a taxi for longer hops.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Akanu Ibiam International Airport (ENU) is the main airport in the state. It primarily serves domestic flights, including Lagos and Abuja, while international routes are limited and may vary. The state-owned airline Enugu Air operates domestic routes from the airport.

On arrival, the airport can be accessed by buses and taxis, which are the practical options for continuing into the city.
