Getting Around Igboho
Igboho is a town in the Orelope Local Government Area of northern Oyo State, Nigeria, and it is an agrarian community set in guinea savanna terrain of farmlands and scattered trees. It is not a large city with a dense transport network, so getting around is straightforward and informal. The practical options are tricycles, motorcycle taxis, and — for longer journeys — buses and taxis from nearby towns. There is no metro, tram, or urban rail network to navigate, and no airport in the town itself.
Tricycles (Keke Napep / Marwa)
Tricycles, locally known as keke napep or Marwa, are one of the main ways to move around Igboho. They are a useful choice for visitors who want a bit more shelter and stability than a motorcycle, and they are well suited to carrying a small group or luggage.
- Where they operate: Tricycles are exclusive to some areas of the town, so they may not be available everywhere you want to go.
- Fares: Expect to pay in the region of ₦70–100 for a trip (as of early 2022).
- Practical tip: Because coverage is patchy, ask your driver or your host whether a tricycle serves your destination before you set out, and agree the fare before you start.
Motorcycles (Okada)
Motorcycle taxis, called okada, are the fastest and most common means of moving around Igboho. They reach all areas of the town, which makes them the most reliable option when tricycles do not serve your route.
- Best for: Short distances and quick hops across town.
- Fares: Expect to pay in the region of ₦100–200 for a trip (as of early 2022).
- Practical tip: Okada is the fallback that works everywhere, so if you are unsure how to reach a place, a motorcycle taxi is the simplest answer.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Igboho does not have a formal urban bus network, and you cannot get a direct bus to Igboho from major cities or towns except within Oyo State and Kwara State. For a visitor already in town, this means buses are not a practical way to move around locally; they matter mainly for arriving and leaving.
- Within town: Rely on tricycles and okada rather than buses.
- Reaching Igboho by bus: Direct bus services are limited to departures from Oyo State and Kwara State.
- Common routing: Travellers coming from Lagos or southern Nigeria typically route through Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and continue north by road. The Ibadan–Igboho road journey takes roughly two to three hours depending on road conditions and the type of vehicle.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are part of the picture mainly for longer, intercity legs rather than short hops inside Igboho. There is no mention of a local ride-hailing app operating in the town, so plan on arranging transport directly — through your accommodation, a local contact, or at the motor park.
- From Ilorin: You can get a taxi from Ilorin to Igboho, and it is cheaper than taking a taxi from Lagos.
- Practical tip: For intercity taxi trips, agree the fare and destination clearly before departure, and confirm whether the price is for the whole vehicle or per seat.
Walking
Igboho is a town of quarters — among them Obaago, Modeke, Ago-IgiIsubu, Jakuta, Waala, Oke Igboho, Owindin, Oke Akasa, Isalẹ Atemo, Idi elegba and Akitipa — with landmarks such as the town hall and radio station at Owode, the First Central Mosque at Oja-oba Modeke, and the First Baptist Church at Obaago. Walking can work for short errands within a quarter, but the town is spread across distinct quarters rather than laid out as a compact, walkable grid, so for anything beyond a short distance the tricycle and okada options above are more practical.
- Good for: Moving between nearby points within the same quarter, or exploring a market or landmark area on foot.
- Less good for: Crossing town between quarters, especially in the heat — March is the hottest month, and the cool season runs from early July to late September.
Getting There From the Airport
Igboho has no airport of its own, so air travel means flying into a nearby city and continuing by road.
- Flights: There is a limited number of local air flights to Ilorin from Abuja and Lagos, operated by Overland and Capital Airlines.
- From Ilorin: Once you land at Ilorin, you can take a taxi onward to Igboho — a cheaper option than arranging a taxi all the way from Lagos.
- Alternative routing: Many travellers, especially those coming from Lagos or southern Nigeria, route through Ibadan and then travel north by road to Igboho.
Practical Summary
- Short hops in town: Okada (motorcycle taxi) — fastest and available everywhere.
- More comfort or carrying luggage: Tricycle (keke napep / Marwa) — but only in some areas.
- Arriving by air: Fly to Ilorin, then take a taxi to Igboho.
- Arriving by road: Buses to Igboho run only from Oyo State and Kwara State; otherwise route through Ibadan.
- Fares: Agree the price before you set off, and carry small cash notes.
