Getting around Nkpor: an orientation
Nkpor sits in Idemili North, Anambra State, attached to the much larger city of Onitsha to the west, with Oze to the north, Ogidi and Umuoji to the east, and Obosi to the south. Because it is part of the Onitsha metropolis, a visitor will find that movement in and around Nkpor is overwhelmingly by road, and that the town's markets, hospital and hotels are the practical anchors for most trips.
Rail, metro and tram
There is no metro or tram network serving Nkpor, and no local rail service a visitor can use to move around the town. The wider Igboland region is described as being integrated into national transit networks through expanding rail infrastructure, but for getting about Nkpor itself you should plan on road transport.
Buses and other public transport
Nkpor's most useful public transport asset for a visitor is its intercity bus terminal. Peace Mass Transit (PMT) operates a terminal on Uzoegwu Road at Nkpor Junction, near Onitsha. It is open daily, Sunday through Saturday, from 5am to 6pm.
- Buying tickets: booking can be done online through the company's site, pmt.ng, and payment at the terminal is accepted in cash or by POS card payment.
- Where it goes: routes from the Nkpor terminal include Enugu, Nsukka, Lagos, Abuja, Calabar, Port Harcourt, Aba, Owerri, Nnewi, Ibadan, Asaba, Ikom, Benin, Abakaliki, Mararaba, Awka, Warri, Gariki, Jos, Ilorin, Abakpa and Minna.
- Onward connections: other operators named in route planning for the region include ABC Transport and Afrique Con, which are useful when a journey requires a transfer through Enugu or Onitsha.
Note that the terminal's hours and route list come from a user-generated business listing and are self-reported, so it is worth confirming details before you rely on them for a tight connection.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis are a practical option for direct journeys into and around the area; a direct taxi trip between regional cities and Nkpor is a recognised way to travel. For longer intercity hops, buses are generally the cheaper choice, while a taxi buys you a direct, door-to-door run.
Walking
Walking is best treated as a way to cover short hops within a single area — around a market, your hotel, or the bus terminal — rather than as a way to cross the town. Nkpor is a core town of the Onitsha metropolis and hosts several major markets, including Mgbuka Nkpor, Nkpor Main Market, the motorcycle spare parts market, the motor spares market and Eke Nkpor, so expect busy, commercial surroundings. Rain is a real factor in planning: the town sees rain across much of the year, so keep a plan B for wet days.
Getting in from the airport
The airport serving the Onitsha metropolis, Awka, Nnewi and neighbouring areas is Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport in Umueri. Commercial airlines, including Air Peace, operate regularly from this facility. Enugu International Airport also serves the surrounding states and is a useful alternative, particularly if your itinerary already runs through Enugu.
From either airport, the practical approach is by road: take a taxi for a direct transfer, or connect to an intercity bus. Enugu is well linked by bus to Onitsha — Afrique Con is named on that route — and from Onitsha you are a short road hop from Nkpor. If you are arriving with heavy luggage or at an awkward hour, a pre-arranged taxi is the simplest option.
Practical tips
- Base your plans on road travel; build in time for transfers if your route runs through Enugu or Onitsha.
- Book intercity buses online where possible and carry cash as well as a card for POS payment.
- Confirm terminal opening hours and departures directly, since published listing details can be out of date.
- There are plenty of hotels in and near Nkpor, so ask yours to help arrange taxis and airport transfers.
