Getting Around Awka
Awka is the capital of Anambra State, sitting in the Igbo heartland of southeastern Nigeria along the Mamu River. Like most Nigerian cities, getting around Awka relies primarily on motorcycles, tricycles, buses, taxis, or a private car. There is no metro, tram, or light-rail network in the city, so visitors should plan on road-based transport for all local journeys.
Local Transport: Tricycles, Motorcycles, and Buses
The workhorses of Awka transport are tricycles (often called keke) and motorcycle taxis (okadas), which are quick and convenient for navigating through traffic and for short hops across town. Public buses cover longer distances within the city and to nearby towns. For a visitor, tricycles are generally the easiest option for point-to-point trips, while okadas are the fastest way to cut through congestion.
Several of Awka's main visitor destinations are reachable by tricycle or bus from anywhere in the city, including:
- Roban Stores — a shopping mall adjacent to the CBN building, by Green Tower, off the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, immediately after Aroma flyover.
- Everyday Supermarket — on old INEC Road, opposite Ultimate Plaza, by Regina Caeli junction, off the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway.
- Solution Fun City — a recreation park along the Enugu–Onitsha express road, by Kwata Flyover, where you can play games, watch movies, and eat out.
- Ikenga Mall — a modern shopping complex on the Agụ Awka axis along Zik Avenue, housing brands such as Marketsquare.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are readily available and affordable for short distances, making them a straightforward choice for visitors who prefer a private, door-to-door ride. Car rentals are also possible for self-driving, though you should expect local driving conditions to differ from what you may be used to. As a general safety practice, use reputable transport services, avoid walking alone at night, secure your valuables, and stay cautious in crowded areas.
Walkability
Awka is not a city where walking is the primary way to get around; the practical guidance for visitors is to rely on tricycles, okadas, buses, and taxis for most journeys. Walking is best limited to short, local errands and daytime use, with extra caution after dark.
Arriving by Air
Visitors arriving by air use Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport, situated at Umueri in Ayamelu Local Government Area of Anambra State (IATA: ABB, ICAO: DNAS). The airport handles domestic services connecting the city to Nigeria's major metropolitan centres. From the airport, onward travel into Awka is by road, typically by taxi or bus.
Note that some travel sources instead point to Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu as the nearest airport, roughly an hour's drive away, with onward travel by taxi or bus. Either way, the final leg into Awka is made by road.
Arriving by Bus
Many transport companies offer daily services into Awka from almost all major cities and states around the country, as well as international destinations in West Africa. Most of these operators are clustered around the Unizik Junction area along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, which is the main arrival point for intercity buses. Operators serving Awka include:
- GUO Transport — St. Michael Shopping Plaza, by Unizik Junction, Awka–Onitsha Enugu Expressway. Known for comfortable, reliable vehicles and customer service; operates Hiace, Sienna, and Coach buses.

Most of these companies operate daily from early morning until evening. If you are coming from anywhere in Awka, ask to be dropped at Unizik Junction, where the bus terminals are concentrated.
Arriving by Train
Train services run from major cities to nearby stations, after which you complete the journey to Awka by a short bus or taxi ride. Rail is not a direct option into the city itself.
Road Connections and Day Trips
Awka is well connected by road. The West–East Federal highway links Lagos, Benin City, Asaba, Onitsha, and Enugu to Awka, and several local roads connect it to other important towns such as Oko, Ekwulobia, Agulu, Enugwu-Ukwu, Abagana, and Nnewi. The city sits strategically midway between Onitsha and Enugu, which makes both feasible as day trips — Onitsha is roughly an hour's drive away and Enugu about an hour and a half. Road networks also link Awka to Onitsha's port and Enugu's industrial zone.
Timing Your Visit
The best season for travelling around Awka is the dry season, from November to March. The rainy season runs from June to October, with heavy downpours that can disrupt travel, so build extra time into your plans if you visit then.
