Getting Around Bandar Sunway
Bandar Sunway (also known as Sunway City) is an integrated township in Subang Jaya, Selangor, built around the idea of a 15-minute city. For a visitor, that matters: many of the area's main draws sit close together, and the local public transport network is designed to link them up. This guide covers the practical options for moving around the township and for reaching it from the airport.
How Visitors Get Around
Most trips within Bandar Sunway are short, and the township's layout means you can often combine walking with a quick ride on the local transit line. The main destinations — Sunway Pyramid mall, Sunway Lagoon, the universities and the commercial streets — are clustered closely enough that a mix of walking, the BRT line, buses and ride-hailing covers almost everything a visitor needs.
Rail, Metro and the BRT Line
Bandar Sunway is home to Malaysia's first — and to date only — bus rapid transit line, the BRT Sunway Line. It runs from Setia Jaya station (Sunway-Setia Jaya) in the north down to USJ7 station in the south, passing through Sunway Mentari, Sunway Pyramid and Monash University along the way. This makes it the backbone of local transit: it connects the township's key stops and links to the wider rail network at its northern end.
- BRT Sunway Line: operated by Rapid KL, connecting Setia Jaya in the north to USJ7 in the south via Sunway Mentari, Sunway Pyramid and Monash University.
- Subang Jaya Komuter station: the urban-suburban rail link serving the township, useful for onward connections.
- Sunway Monorail (Suntrek 2000): a monorail once operated within Bandar Sunway, but it has since been shut down. Part of its old infrastructure was later incorporated into the BRT line, so don't expect to ride it today.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Rapid KL is the main public transport operator in the area, running both the BRT line and local bus services. Buses are a practical way to reach nearby rail stations and neighbouring townships.
- Rapid KL buses connect Sunway Pyramid to Subang Jaya station, a trip of roughly 15–20 minutes.
- Smart Selangor bus route SJ02 is a state-subsidised service linking Bandar Sunway to Pusat Bandar Puchong.
- Rapid KL also runs a direct bus service in the area (route code SJ02), though some journeys can be slow — one listed trip takes over an hour — so check timing if you're on a schedule.
For operator information, Rapid KL can be reached at +60 3 7885 2585, suggest@rapidkl.com.my, or myrapid.com.my.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely available and are a convenient option for short hops, especially in the heat or when carrying luggage. A taxi ride between points within Bandar Sunway, such as from the township to Sunway Pyramid, takes only a few minutes.
- Taxi operators serving the area include Blue Cab, Comfort Taxi, Public Cab and Sunlight Taxi.
- Ride-hailing is also available, with Grab Taxi among the options serving Bandar Sunway.
Walkability
Bandar Sunway is a compact, integrated township, and walking is a realistic way to cover short distances. The walk between the township and Sunway Pyramid, for example, takes only around 13 minutes. Because the area is planned around the 15-minute city concept, many everyday needs — shopping, dining, accommodation and the universities — are within easy reach on foot, though you may prefer a short ride in hot or rainy weather.
Getting There from the Airport
Bandar Sunway's nearest airport is Subang Airport, located about 13 kilometres from the township. Since May 2018, it has been possible to reach the airport by rail: take an interchange at Subang Jaya station onto the KL Sentral–Terminal Skypark Line.
For travellers arriving at Kuala Lumpur's main international gateway, the practical route into Bandar Sunway is by rail into the Klang Valley network and then onward via the Subang Jaya Komuter station or the BRT line. The township is also well connected by road, sitting near major highways, so taxis and ride-hailing are viable door-to-door options from the airport.
Getting Around by Car
Bandar Sunway is connected to Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya and Klang by a network of highways, which makes driving straightforward if you have a car. The main highways serving the township are the Federal Highway, the Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS), the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) and the Damansara–Puchong Expressway (LDP).
- The NPE runs directly in front of Sunway Pyramid mall.
- The LDP is the usual choice for motorists coming from Puchong, Putrajaya and Seremban.
- Bandar Sunway sits near the junction of the LDP and the KL–Port Klang Federal Highway (Federal Route 2).
Practical Tips
- Use the BRT Sunway Line as your default way to move between the township's main stops, including Sunway Pyramid and Monash University.
- Combine walking with short rides — many key destinations are only minutes apart.
- Keep Rapid KL contact details handy for bus and BRT queries.
- If you're flying into Subang Airport, plan to interchange at Subang Jaya station for the rail link.
