Getting Around Pasir Gudang
Pasir Gudang is an industrial and port city in eastern Johor, and it is not a place where you can rely on trains or trams to move between neighbourhoods. Getting around is done by bus, taxi, ride-hailing or private car, with the two main hubs being the bus and taxi terminals at Pasir Gudang city centre and in Masai. Plan your movements around those two points and the local bus network that links them.
Rail, Metro and Trams
There is no metro, tram or urban rail network serving Pasir Gudang, so you cannot use rail for getting around the city itself. The only rail connection mentioned for the area is a railway line linking Pasir Gudang to Kempas Bahru railway station; this is a rail link rather than a local passenger metro, so treat it as a connection toward the wider Johor Bahru rail system rather than as city transport.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Public buses are the main form of public transport in Pasir Gudang. The city is served by the Iskandar Malaysia Bus Service System, a collaboration between the Johor State Government and Pasukan Pengangkutan Awam Iskandar Malaysia (PAIM), supervised by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and run by selected bus companies. Buses on this system are equipped with GPS and CCTV, drivers are trained, and operators are monitored against KPIs set by PAIM. If you have feedback on a service, there is a dedicated line: 1-800-88-3010.
The operators serving the area include Syarikat Pengangkutan Maju Bhd (tel: 07-2370271), Syarikat Kenderaan S&S Sdn Bhd (tel: 013-7771246) and Handal Indah Sdn Bhd (tel: 07-3582244 / SMS: 012-7178080). Syarikat Pengangkutan Maju has served the Pasir Gudang area since the late 1980s, originally carrying factory workers, and its routes link Pasir Gudang with Masai, Johor Bahru and other areas.
Local routes connect the two main terminals and the residential and industrial estates in between:
- IM12: Masai Terminal to Pasir Gudang Terminal, passing Darul Hanan, Taman Bukit Dahlia, Taman Cendana, Taman Kota Masai, Scientex, Politeknik Pasir Gudang, Kampung Kopok Baru, Kampung Pasir Putih and Taman Air Biru, among other stops.
- IM13: Pasir Gudang Terminal to Masai Terminal via Jalan Masjid, Taman Cendana and Kip Mart Masai.
- IM14: Masai Terminal to Pasir Gudang Terminal via Bukit Dahlia, Tasek Perdana, Persiaran Cendana, Lake Hill, Persiaran Scientex and Nusa Damai.
- IM15: Pasir Gudang Terminal to Masai Terminal via Jalan Bandar, Jalan Keluli, Taman Pasir Putih, Taman Kota Masai and Jalan Kota Masai.
For longer journeys, buses run between Larkin Bus Terminal in Johor Bahru and Pasir Gudang; the fare is around RM5 and the trip takes roughly 45 minutes. From Johor Bahru city centre, bus fares are in the region of RM3–5. If you are heading back to the city centre, ask for "Bandaraya Johor Bahru". Intercity fares to the Pasir Gudang bus station start from around RM3 from Kuala Lumpur and RM4 from the East Coast.
Other useful services in the wider area include Maju bus 224 between Larkin Bus Terminal and Pasir Gudang (via Plaza Pelangi, Tebrau City and Johor Jaya), and Maju buses 39, 200 and 208 from Larkin to Johor Bahru city centre and Masai. Transit Link 133 and 133A start from Masai and loop to Johor Bahru and back, while Causeway Link 9B from Johor Bahru also stops at Masai Bus Terminal.
Bus and Taxi Terminals
There are two terminals to know:
- Masai Bus and Taxi Terminal (Terminal Bas dan Teksi Masai), in Masai.
- Pasir Gudang Bus and Taxi Terminal (Terminal Bas dan Teksi Pasir Gudang), in Pasir Gudang city centre.
A combined bus and taxi stop also operates at Kompleks Pusat Bandar Pasir Gudang, with sheltered seating and food stalls nearby; a taxi stand was first built at the same complex in the early 1990s.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are available from the bus and taxi terminals and from the stand at Kompleks Pusat Bandar. Fares are typically charged per seat on shared or fixed routes: a taxi from Larkin Taxi Terminal in Johor Bahru to Pasir Gudang costs around RM11 per seat and takes roughly 30–45 minutes, while a taxi from the Pasir Gudang taxi station to the Pasir Gudang taxi terminal is around RM3 per seat. Ride-hailing apps are a convenient alternative for door-to-door trips, particularly for reaching industrial areas, hotels and residential estates that are not directly on a bus route.
Walkability
Pasir Gudang is a spread-out industrial and port city rather than a compact walking destination. The practical approach is to walk within a single area — around the city centre and Kompleks Pusat Bandar, for example — and use buses, taxis or ride-hailing for anything further. The local bus routes are designed to link the terminals with the surrounding housing and industrial estates, which gives you a workable way to cover longer distances without a car.
Getting There
By plane: Pasir Gudang has no airport of its own. The nearest airport is Senai International Airport (JHB) in Senai, which also appears in local transport information as Sultan Ismail Airport, Senai, Johor. From Senai you continue to Pasir Gudang by road — bus, taxi or ride-hailing — typically routing through Johor Bahru and then onward via the Pasir Gudang Highway or the Johor Bahru East Coast Parkway.
By car: From Johor Bahru, follow the signs north towards Kota Tinggi and turn off to Pasir Gudang where signposted, then follow the main Lebuhraya Pasir Gudang (Federal Route 17). Alternatively, take the Johor Bahru East Coast Highway, which passes by Permas Jaya. The Senai–Desaru Expressway also runs through the area, with interchanges at Cahaya Baru and the Pasir Gudang Highway.
By bus: Buses connect Pasir Gudang with Johor Bahru and the wider region, including services from Larkin Bus Terminal and from the city centre, as well as the local IM routes between Masai and Pasir Gudang.
By boat: Pasir Gudang has a passenger ferry terminal with services to and from Batam in Indonesia's Riau Islands, useful if you are arriving from or continuing to Sumatra.
