Getting Around Ciudad Victoria
Ciudad Victoria is the capital of Tamaulipas and a state bureaucratic centre, which means it functions more as a working regional city than a tourist resort. Getting around is straightforward: the city has a dense local bus network, plentiful taxis, and ride-hailing apps that work well throughout the urban area. There is no metro, rail, or tram system to navigate, so your choices come down to buses, taxis, ride-hailing, and your own two feet.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Ciudad Victoria has no metro, light rail, or tram network, and there is no passenger rail service a visitor can use to move around the city or reach it from elsewhere. Plan your trip around road-based transport instead.
Buses and Public Transport
The city is served by a large network of bus and mini-bus routes that circulate both within Ciudad Victoria and into the surrounding areas. These are the main form of public transport for locals and are the cheapest way to cover longer distances across town.
- Routes fan out across the city and its outskirts, so most neighbourhoods have some bus service.
- Fares are typically paid in cash on board, so keep small notes and coins handy.
- Buses and mini-buses can be crowded at peak times, and stops are often marked only informally, so it helps to ask your hotel or a local which route serves your destination.
For longer journeys into or out of the region, the city's main bus station is the Central de Autobuses Ciudad Victoria on Calle F. Berriozabal. It is an older terminal and poorly maintained, with few food and drink vendors and restrooms that charge a small fee, but it is an important hub for regional connections. It is served by companies including Transpais and Estrella Blanca, with services to Tampico, Matamoros, Monterrey, San Luis Potosí, Tamazunchale, Ciudad Valles, other smaller cities in Tamaulipas, and northern Veracruz.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are plentiful in the downtown area and are generally considered safe. As a precaution, it is a good idea to use taxis from known sitios (official taxi stands) or to have your hotel or restaurant staff call one for you rather than hailing an unmarked car on the street.
Ride-hailing is well established in the city. Uber operates throughout Ciudad Victoria, and inDrive, a similar rideshare app that is popular in this region, is also available.

Walking
Ciudad Victoria's historic centre was laid out in a grid, and the city's core includes the historic centre, the main square, and the cathedral area. This makes the downtown practical to explore on foot, with the main civic and cultural sights clustered together. Outside the centre, the city spreads out, so walking is best suited to short trips within a neighbourhood or around the downtown rather than crossing the city.
Getting from the Airport into the City
General Pedro José Méndez International Airport (CVM) sits on the outskirts of the city, roughly 18.5 km out along the Carretera Soto La Marina–Ciudad Victoria. Because it is outside the urban core, you will need ground transport to reach your accommodation.
- The airport is served by flights from Mexico City (AICM) on Aeroméxico, from Monterrey on Viva Aerobus, and from Mexico City (AIFA) on Mexicana.
- Arrange a taxi or a ride-hailing pickup for the run into the city; given the airport's outlying location, this is the most practical option for most visitors.
- If you prefer public transport, ask locally about which bus or mini-bus route connects the airport area to the city, since the airport lies outside the main downtown network.
