Orientation: Where Texcoco Sits

Texcoco de Mora is a city in the State of Mexico, about 25 km northeast of Mexico City, and it serves as the municipal seat of the municipality of Texcoco. For a visitor, the key practical fact is that Texcoco is a separate city from Mexico City, not a neighborhood of it — so getting in and out is a real trip, not a short hop. The city sits on what was once the shore of Lake Texcoco; most of the lake has been drained, and much of the municipality now rests on lakebed. The terrain is generally flat and the climate is temperate and semi-arid, with most rain falling between June and October.

Within the city, the historic center (El Centro) is the natural anchor for a visitor, and it is one of the city's named sectors. Other sectors and communities include Barrio San Pedro, El Xolache I and II, Joyas de San Mateo, San Juanito, Santa Úrsula, Niños Héroes, Valle de Santa Cruz, Las Salinas, Las Américas, San Lorenzo, El Carmen, San Mateo, San Martín, La Conchita, Joyas de Santa Ana and Zaragoza.

How Visitors Get Around the City

Texcoco is not a city with a rail-based urban transit system, so visitors should plan on a combination of walking in the center, local buses and combis for longer hops, and taxis or ride-hailing for convenience and late hours. The practical approach is to treat the historic center as walkable and to use motorized transport for anything beyond it.

Rail, Metro and Tram

There is no metro, tram or light-rail network serving Texcoco de Mora itself. The rail and metro system a visitor will encounter is Mexico City's, and it does not extend into Texcoco. In practice, this means the metro is useful only as part of a longer journey toward Mexico City — for example, connecting to a bus terminal on the Mexico City side — and not as a way to move around Texcoco. Plan your local movement around buses, taxis and walking instead.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Buses are the backbone of public transport between Texcoco and Mexico City, and they are the option most visitors will actually use. The main intercity connection runs from Mexico City's Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente (TAPO) to a stop in Texcoco known as "Fase 2."

Within Texcoco and its surrounding communities, local buses and combis cover the routes that the intercity buses do not. These are informal-feeling but widely used; ask at your hotel or at the center for the specific route toward your destination, since routes are identified by destination rather than by number in a way a visitor can easily decode.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a straightforward way to cover distances within Texcoco and to reach the city from Mexico City. A taxi between Mexico City and Texcoco takes roughly half an hour in normal conditions, and costs considerably more than the bus — a reasonable choice if you are traveling with luggage, arriving late, or splitting the fare among several people.

Ride-hailing and shared-ride options also exist on this corridor. BlaBlaCar Mexico, a rideshare service, lists the Mexico City–Texcoco route with departures a couple of times a day and a journey time of around 43 minutes, at a price comparable to the bus. Availability is limited, so it works best as a planned option rather than a spontaneous one. Within the city, agree on the fare before you get into a street taxi, or use a ride-hailing app where available to avoid negotiation.

Walkability

The historic center of Texcoco is the most walkable part of the city and the area where a visitor will spend most of their time on foot. The center concentrates the Cathedral, the Juanino Monastery and the market life that gives the city its character, and these sit close enough together to cover on foot in a morning or afternoon.

Outside the center, walking becomes less practical. The city is spread across many sectors and communities, and the municipality as a whole extends over a large territory with more than 160 communities beyond the city proper. Distances between the center and outlying points of interest — such as the archeological sites of Texcotzingo and Huexotla, or Chapingo Autonomous University — are better covered by bus or taxi. Note that the city has a history of road blockages and protests, including blockades of main roads in the historic center and of the Texcoco-Lechería highway, so allow flexibility in your plans and ask locally before setting out on a day when something is happening.

Getting from the Airport into Texcoco

Texcoco has no airport of its own serving commercial traffic, so the relevant airport is Mexico City's. The most practical route into Texcoco is by bus from TAPO, the eastern bus terminal in Mexico City, which is the departure point for the frequent Autobuses de Texcoco service to the "Fase 2" stop in Texcoco. From the airport, make your way to TAPO and board there; the onward bus ride is direct and takes roughly 40 minutes.

If you prefer door-to-door travel, a taxi from Mexico City to Texcoco takes roughly half an hour and is the simplest option with luggage, at a correspondingly higher cost. Rideshare is a cheaper middle ground but runs on a limited schedule, so it is best arranged in advance.
