Getting around Beni Mellal

Beni Mellal is a mid-sized city in north-central Morocco and the capital of the Béni Mellal-Khénifra Region, sitting at the foot of Jbel Tassemit beside the plains of Beni Amir. It also works as a strategic transport hub for the wider Central High Atlas region, which makes it a practical base for exploring the surrounding mountains. For a visitor, getting around is mostly a matter of buses, taxis and your own two feet.

Rail, metro and tram

Beni Mellal has no rail, metro or tram network. There is no train station in the city, so visitors should not plan on arriving or moving around by rail. Intercity travel is handled by road instead: long-distance buses and grands taxis connect the city with other parts of Morocco.

Buses and other public transport

Buses are the main form of public transport in and out of Beni Mellal. The city has two intercity bus stops. Most buses use the Central Bus Station on Boulevard de l'Armée Royale, while a second stop is at Angle Bd Mohamed V. Several operators serve the city, including CTM Buses Morocco, Trs El Bachiri, Itrane Voyage and Trs Bab Allah.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Grands taxis are the shared-taxi option for regional trips. In Beni Mellal they operate from terminals adjacent to the main bus station. One useful example is the service to Azilal, which takes about an hour.

Walking

The city is compact enough that walking is a sensible way to cover short trips, especially around the central bus station and the Boulevard de l'Armée Royale area where transport connections converge.

Getting from the airport into the city

Beni Mellal is served by Beni Mellal Airport. Once in the city, the Central Bus Station on Boulevard de l'Armée Royale is the main hub for onward travel.

By car

If you are driving, Beni Mellal lies on the N8 highway, which originates in Fes. From Beni Mellal you can take the N8 and turn onto the R508 for a scenic drive via Afourer to Azilal.
