Getting Around Khemisset

Khemisset is a mid-sized city in northern Morocco, sitting on the A2 motorway roughly midway between Rabat and Meknès. For a visitor, the practical reality is that this is a city best navigated on foot and by road: there is no metro, tram, or light rail network here, and the historic narrow-gauge railway that once linked the city to Rabat was abandoned long ago and no longer exists. The transport options that matter are buses, taxis, and your own two feet.

Rail, Metro and Tram

Khemisset has no metro, tram, or light rail system, and it is not currently served by a passenger rail line. The only railway in the city's history was a 600 mm narrow-gauge line built by the French between 1912 and 1914, running from Rabat via Souk el Abra des Sehoul, Tiflet, and Dar Caid Bou Driss to Khemisset. That line was abandoned in 1935 and its tracks were lifted before 1942. Part of its old track bed between Tiflet and Khemisset was later used for the Rabat–Khemisset main road.

In practice, this means you should not plan on arriving or moving around by train. If you are coming from Rabat or Meknès, look to buses or shared taxis instead.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Intercity buses are the main form of public transport serving Khemisset. The city is served by CTM Buses Morocco, with connections to a range of destinations. Buses generally stop at La gare routière (the main bus station), while a second stop is listed at the TotalEnergies gas station on the R404. If you are unsure where to board or alight, La gare routière is the safer default.

Useful things to know when travelling by bus:

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

The source material for Khemisset does not document a ride-hailing or app-based taxi service in the city, so you should not assume one is available. The practical assumption for a visitor is that road transport within and around the city is handled by taxis and by the bus network described above. For local trips, arrange your taxi directly and agree on the fare or confirm the meter before setting off.

Walkability

Khemisset is a compact city, and walking is a reasonable way to cover the centre and reach the main bus station and local amenities. Because there is no rail or metro network to connect districts, walking and short taxi hops are the natural way to get between points within the city. Do bear in mind that the region has a moderate climate suited to agriculture, so conditions are generally manageable on foot, but plan around the heat during the middle of the day.

Getting There from the Airport

Khemisset does not have its own airport. The nearby airport is Rabat–Salé Airport, which is the practical arrival point for visitors heading to the city.

To reach Khemisset from the airport, your realistic options are:

Whichever option you choose, book bus tickets in advance where possible and confirm your drop-off point in Khemisset, since the city has more than one bus stop.
